I’m currently looking into various keyword research tools for an upcoming project. Some of the tools I have been reviewing internally are Wordze, KeywordDiscovery and the keyword research tools provided by the search engines.
So, I’d like to ask our SEJ reader base; what keyword research tool(s) do you recommend and why?
Thanks.

I use wordtracker and the free ones from the search engines. Wordtracker isn’t bad but its still fairly limited. After reading aaron walls post about the latest Microsoft Excel I’m intrigued by the fact that Adcenter labs syncs up with it very nicely. It seems like the upgrade might be worth it. :)
Aaron at SEObook has a great tool that uses WordTracker and bridges a calculation across Google, Yahoo and MSN… it also gives links to other quick picks from the big three.
It has a lot of data, but it is pretty balance.
Great Tool!

I prefer to use Keyword Discovery for most general research. There are times though when there’s no data to support my seed terms — and I then turn to WordTracker. If I’m running a specific paid search campaign though, I consult the source first (with a dose of reality). Google and Yahoo have strong suggestion tools available for most needs.
My 2cs…
Start with Wordtracker add a healthy dose of scepticism and then, if funds allow/it’s not too competitive a field, run a PPC campaign.
The # of impressions gives a useful check on Wordtracker results and enables you to get an initial feel for which phrases might offer better conversion.
I agree with Eric. Keyword Discovery is great for general research, but there are a lot of things I don’t like about it. After KD, I usually turn to various free tools, especially the Google Adwords KW tool.
I use the paid versions of Wordtracker, Keyword Discovery, and Wordze along with Google’s keyword tools and Excel.
I like to use different sources of data for comparison, rather than rely on a single source.
Hello Loren, long time no see!
The only keyword research tool we use here is Wordtracker.
Read the many reasons why I think it’s the best here:

I use Wordtracker. I like both the free and paid versions…

Keyword Discovery: I always cross reference the results with wordtracker, but i really like the historical/seasonal traffic charts provided by keyword discovery.
I prefer using WordTracker and Keyword Discovery.
does anyone have any experience with Keyword Spy?
I prefer WordTracker and Keyworddiscovery also I would recommend the SEObook International Keyword Suggestor with data from some keyword research tools..
On tactic is to use the ‘SUGGESTS’ feature from Google and Yahoo search. Additionally, the suggestions made during the creation of ad campaigns are helpful.
Google offers both keyword and synonym suggestions
Coming directly from the search engines themselves, one feels that the data has more credibility.
For a ton of tools, free to paid, normal to exotic, have a look here.

I usually use a mix of tools, I use Wordtracker, Nichebot and Wordze. Oh, what also doesn’t hurt is doing some competitive intelligence to see what the competition is up to hehe.

Like most others, I use primarily Google Adwords and Wordtracker. I am not really sure that they are truly accurate, but it gives you a basis to go by.
