Have a look at collectivecortex.com for a Linux desktopsearch tool. Runs on KDE with no problems, it's an application though rather than a browser based (Google) tool.

CHris is right. Copernic has been my gold standard for searching...that is until I kicked M$ to the curb a year ago. I am happily window-less now. However, Copernic would be a GodSend to Linux. It's the best there is as far as search goes.

Actually, George, you're not quite right either, because what Aaron mentioned was in fact a desktop-wide (pervasive) search tecnology that would integrate with, for example, file dialogues as well as the Control Centre. It's just the Google stuff that's wrong, or rather exagerated.

Actually, the press managed to completely screw this up. I'm at the world summit at the moment and we were all in stitches when we saw the article published (promptly followed by "Aaron - what the HELL is this?!?!").

Basically, the idea is that we have things like the KDE Control Center which has a billion configuration options, each with an advanced options tab and this can be very confusing for the user. Therefore Scott Wheeler proposed the idea of a search based control centre where we use meta data to link files together and also implicit and explicit links between files etc so that we can find configuration options more easily/efficiently. The "Google enabled desktop" bit is a corruption of the comment that it's currently "easier to find something on the internet with Google than it is to find something on your own computer". Silly press.

We certainly do need a faster and better way to find files on the Linux system. I currently go directly to the command line to search for files because it is faster. KDE has always been my preferred desktop environment. Enhancements like these will always be welcome!

Glad to see that Google is reaching into different revenue streams. This will hopefully make them more bullet proof when Microsoft tries to Netscape them in the years to come :-)
Note, this comment is a misrepresentation of the story, there is no connection between Google and KDE - Loren
