Lycos Europe beat larger rivals Google and Yahoo to the punch by offering e-mail service featuring one gigabyte of storage space, Lycos announced on Tuesday. According to Lycos Europe, the new service was going live in the United Kingdom on Tuesday with other European countries to follow.
Lycos Europe’s offering is an ad-free version which includes storage space of 1GB with anti-spam and anti-virus software, and fully secure. The service will cost 3.49 pounds per month [$6.17/U.S.] How large is an email storage space of 1GB? Rueters reports that one gigabyte would hold 250,000 e-mails or 2,000 photos or 250-300 songs, not bad.
Lycos’s email announcement more or less trumped US rivals Yahoo and Google in the big storage mail wars. While Yahoo has been touting that they will soon begin to offer “virtually unlimited storage” for its paid e-mail customers and will upgrade free users to 100MB and Google has announced beta tests of the free ad based Google GMail service, neither has been able to yet deliver a product for public usage.

No body has “trumped” Google because no one has
done it for free. If you don’t think that is important
then wait till Google’s email is up and running and
compare the amount of new users between them
and anyone else.
The trumping is getting a final product out to the public, even if it the paying public. Lycos did it first to the surprise of many. Cheers and thanks for the comment.
spymac, walla communications (an israeli portal), and 2 russian portals, Yandex.ru and Mail.ru, already offer these services… for free
it is very nice
There’s also a company that offers 2Gb free email:
2Gb mail
Googles mail looks to be much better than lycos because they will have the spam filter and virus software for free. The big idea though is that Google is using their search technology to search through your e-mail rather than sorting them in folders! Huge improvement. Wish someone else thought of this.
I have heard that yahoo china is giving 1gb email storage too, freee…
