I know that to many people I encounter the only way to build a web site is in WordPress. This is just not the case, but millions have learned how to build WP themes and/or modify existing themes that are out there. WordPress is great and offers a lot of benefits, but it has drawbacks as well. There are many businesses that need a lot more than what WordPress can offer.
I know SEJ has a diverse following and I want to offer articles that will meet as many needs as possible. So, please tell me more about your self / your business. How do you build web sites for your clients or yourselves? We listed a few options to choose from below, but you can add to the list.

Mellisa, today WordPress is very powerful and with help of plugins and themes it could be mix of lot of CMS. Usually I use WordPress for my websites and offer same CMS for my clients, but sometimes I do not need powerful website and I use just HTML/PHP and JavaScript. I know that WordPress is not very good idea for very specific websites, such as eshop or big classified portal etc..
Most people uses WordPress, because they know what they get: power, easy to use, easy to admin and good for SEO.
Rokas, WordPress can do a lot of things and there are many plugins that give you options. However, WP is not “the” solution for every thing and everyone. It does have many limitations depending on the applications needed for a site. There are many thing that are possible with WP, but it might take you many, many hours to get something to kind of work vs something that other options have built in and ready to go.
My issue with WordPress are the misconceptions. It is easy to learn and easy for people to buy themes and get them up. This doesn’t mean that everyone can get everything they need and want for their websites. There are times when a bigger beast is needed.
WordPress and Drupal all the way. My Dreamweaver is starting to collect dust.
HTML and WordPress. WordPress is really simple to setup and use, however appropriate backup is required for it as i have encountered virus affected wordpress websites which are almost impossible to remove, before wordpress i could never imagin how a website can be affected by viruses / malwares, but they do. Seems like current version of wordpress is good. HTML on the other hand rocks as well from search engine optimisation perspective, it is just like c++ for desktop software programming.
As templating in most CMS (like Typo3) and blogs (like WordPress) is such a pain in the afternoon, I really love MODX. I never saw anything as easy and conclusive as this CMS (which is quite more than just a CMS).
Can you give more examples of what WordPress can’t do?
If you want a SEO platform the only way to go is CSS. Then you use a wordpress pluggin for blogging.
For me it’s WordPress. I think it’s very powerful.
Hi,
Drupal, Joomla, and WordPress are great tool to create website in quickly, All material is ready only need to execute . Huge content can be mange easily and very helpful for seo too.
DRUPAL is best for USER based website.
Joomla is great for small business website.
Wordpress is best for all blog and news website where all content generation is happening.
Understanding the requirement is important as all CMS is not 100% perfect.
Hi Melissa,
I have started using WordPress from last 2 months for blog and I am finding it very interesting. I have used Drupal and have got a very bad experience. If you are asking for a Poll, then it completely depends on the user’s requirement. Many people like to have a simple HTML website. People who are interested in the looks of website go for dot.net.
We program websites for design firms and find the only way to meet the demands of such custom requirements is to code from scratch – html, css, php and javascript (we have created our own CMS framework and customize for each project). We also do a lot of SEO for clients who have a web site already in place. Recently we have had a couple of new clients who have WP sites and are full of plugins and bloated to a point where the home page takes 10+ seconds to load. That’s crazy! And it is hurting the SEO and user experience. I fear that more of this type of website is coming – not less, as people are not learning how to code and are just assembling other peoples code with no clue about the technical part and how it effects SEO.
The worst part is that the client is not aware of how the website is built (understandably) and how it is hurting their business objective.
WP is a great blog platform and should be used for just that!
Jim, I agree with you on most of your points. People are kind of learning how to use WordPress and are causing all kinds of issues that they do not understand. It does hurt the SEO an user experience. I think any type of web building should be left to the experts.
However, I do believe that WordPress can work very well for some businesses. My business site is built in WordPress and does very well. However, there was a lot of planning ahead of time also. I do not believe WordPress is a solution for all businesses and I think those that do have a lot to learn about evaluating and truly understanding what a business needs to do well online.
Hi Mellisa.
I came back here to see how the post “J” went. I liked to know if Modx or Concrete5 got the highest score. Is there any way to find this out?
Thanks
/Micke
Ds. After working with Joomla, Drupal, WordPress, Concrete5 … I have to say Concrete5 Rules. Now I gonna try ModX for 6 months…
I really don’t get why people try so hard to build everything on wordpress. It’s a great blog platform but….The hardest thing for me was implementing few plugins on one site and tweaking layouts. It just took a lot of time. Now I am happily using modx and working with it is a real treat.
