According to a Hitwise study, Youtube now has a 73.18% share of the US online video market out of a group of 68 online video sites, meaning 73.18% of US visits amongst such online video sites ended up at Youtube. That online video share is up 32% over March of 2007, when Youtube had a 55.28% market share.
Of the top 5 US online video sites; Youtube, MySpaceTV, Google Video, Yahoo Video and Break.com, only Break.com was the only other online video site to grow in market share, by a miniscule percentage.
- MySpaceTV dropped 48%
- Google Video dropped 52%
- Yahoo Video dropped 18%
Hitwise adds that the Online Video category accounted for 1.09 percent of all U.S. Internet visits in March 2008, a decline of 7 percent compared to March 2007. Despite the decrease in U.S. visits, the amount of time spent on the websites increased 7 percent for the week ending April 5, 2008. Hulu.com, which came out of beta the week ending March 15, 2008, was the 22nd most visited website in the category for March 2008 receiving .22 percent of visits to the category.

Interesting! We’re certainly not surprised that YouTube always is up there but Break.com? We have never heard of them and are surprised they’re one of the top 5. Great discovery though!
Good News!!! I am looking forward to do a video marketing campaign for my site on youtube and other video sites.
YouTube is definately an authority web presence! It has unparalled dominance over the video search market, and 2008 set to be a good year. The last 2 years has seen substantial growth, and with Google’s $1.65 Billion aquisition of YouTube.com you can rest assured, YouTube is here to stay. Personally, I think YouTube marketing would be very smart…some serious untapped potential, being the #1 most popular video broadcasting site on the planet!
