The Greatest Payback for SEO Blogging

July 9th, 2008 by Loren Baker, Editor | 12 Comments

A reader left this comment today on Search Engine Journal and seriously, this is the greatest feedback and payback I can imagine from our 5 years of search marketing and SEO coverage :

Mendy Ouzillou

I have been an avid fan of SEJ for about 2 years and my natural search rankings for my glass jewelry and art glass website have truly benefited from your content. I am not a professional in the SEO industry but with the help of SEJ, I have been able to get my rankings up to #1, #2 or #3 for almost all my critical keywords.

Thank you to all the great contributors!

Sure sponsorships, inbound links and other recognition from the search marketing industry is awesome and keeps our blog going, but testimonials like this can put a smile on your face for the whole day.

Thanks for your comment Mendy of Trezora.com and we’ll keep the news, tutorials and tips coming!

That is great news! It’s awesome to see when someone truly benefits from your knowledge– especially on their own!

It would have been nice to get details on HOW the blog helped him.

Which tips were the most effective and how he went about instituting them.

It appears that everything eventually boils down to getting quality, relevant backlinks with good anchor text without the NOFollow tag.

I fully know the feeling when all you give, gives back. There is nothing like it. That is the only reason I blog…

Speaking of which, Loren, any chance of you adding our blog as a suggested resource on the right as well?

Thats some sweet ranking. Congrats Mendy…And good work SEJ.

After Reading the Comment of PR NY… i just did some analysis on Mendy’s website….

And let me tell you ..it doesn’t seem like any kind of link building has been done on the site. So the ranking is purely based upon on page optimization.

The site has over 3,480 pages indexed in google whereas the site which is #2 has only about 800+.

So this shows that content is ’still’ the king and on page optimization is very important.

So… It is not so important to have a linkbuilding strategy or their competitors are not good at all :D

Loren Baker has a very important point here that I totally agree with him.

There is far much more joy and satisfaction that comes from just knowing that what you are doing is genuinely helping others.

More than what money, a career or any other material possessions.

    thank you…

Señor Muñoz - Don’t Jump to a conclusion when you just ‘hear’ something.

Link Building is obviously important - However Links can be ‘gamed’ …which means people can ‘buy’ links and do all sorts of things to ‘get links’ to their site.

However ‘content’ or the ‘quality of relevant’ content that your site has can’t be ‘gamed’ that easily.

So i Believe it has ‘higher’ authority in the ranking process. Now you can disagree all you want …but the example is right infront of you and I have seen a lot myself :)

    Cheers

Good feeling eh Loren? Helping people is wonderful.

To Saad and Senor Munoz, gentlemen…. a careful reading of Search Engine Journal should reveal that BOTH are important

Thank you to all - here is the scoop.

My page on dichroic glass is referenced repeatedly as an authority page. I wrote an article for a jewelry bolg which was not only published but made part of the permanent links on the website. I worked diligently to get links from high ranking sites . I may not have many links, but the links are high quality. I have never particiaped in a link farm and I do not exchange links for the sake of exchanging links. I have signed up for listing on relevant sites when it was free and did not require a reciprocal link. I respond to blogs of all types - don’t be fooled, “nofollow” links do count. If I don’t keep up with responding to blogs just like SEJ’s my rankings begin to slip.

Finally, I’ve worked really hard to create a web site with great content, and relevant titles, meta tags and headings on most every page. There is still a great deal of work to do, but I have outdone my competition at every turn. My competition may have many more links but I will tell you that quality will always win over quantity.

There is much more to learn and much more to do, but SEJ, getelastic, grokdotcom and others will keep me ahead of the pack. I’ve now set my sights on optimizing for “fashion jewelry” which I should have done from the start but SEO is a journey not a destination.

Cheers to all and thanks for the great feedback. Especially big thank you to Loren for both the very unexpected recognition and the great work.
