Niche location local search is not a new concept, various cities have their own local search guides and Backfence was a failed local community site which tried to connect the DC suburbs and never really got off the ground.
Povo has launched for the Boston Area, and it seems to be a hybrid of local search and local networking, destination for finding and sharing information on anything and everything about the Boston area.
Not only can users search for nearby businesses, but community members can discuss the services at these businesses together, vote on kid friendliness of a location and plan meetups.
Povo captures the true spirit of each neighborhood by focusing on a collective description of a place or business. Because of this balanced approach, Povo provides a more authentic and useful view than a series of individual opinions.
Personally, I’m a big fan of Yahoo Local but sometimes turn to smaller, independent sites for more intimate information on my city or neighborhood. It’s like comparing the USA Today paper to the local City Paper.
What’s your favorite local search tool for your hometown?

Ah! Interesting. As a Boston-based company, we are definitely interested in more localized approach to search and love that this is a new Boston site!
