Google Chrome OS Powered Netbooks

SMS Text

Last night Google announced that the company is taking a new direction with its Chrome project, and expanding Chrome beyond just being an optimized web browser, and into an entire operating system, Google Chrome Operating System.

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Google Chrome OS powered Netbooks on the market next year? I foresee lines of Google lovers camped out outside Bestbuy, Walmart or whichever stores Google plans on using for distribution.

  • Surely. I’m now using Asus eeepc 900 with eeebuntu OS. And most tasks are about working with gmail and – i believe that Google itselt could do working with such tasks better.

  • I’d love to try one!

  • Trevor

I’m seriously considering doing Boot Camp for my Mac with Chrome OS once it comes out.

  • I’d like a toolbar fro chrome… but will the OS crash on flash like chrome is doing all the time now?

but.. i have been thinking about getting another laptop so i can do more at once.. i’d buy one.

  • Well, I think it will not be suitable for developers or gamers. However, it might become a cheap SMB desktop OS alternative, or good for students.

  • pinguxx

    What about Android?

  • I would certainly buy one! I am sure there will be some great promotions by Google on it!

  • Hell yeah! i’ll take two!

  • People keep thinking this is going to be a full OS. It is JUST for netbooks…

  • waiting for this, i think google will make it much better then ubuntu.

i am working with gmail, google docs and other services and the operating system from google will do much better with own products.

it is crazy, google now the biggest in the world informational agency, and if this system will became as popular as windows they will know everything about users.

  • Seems like a piece of crap.
I think that basing their operating system on Chrome should make it completely useless. Chrome is like a browser, without all of the things that make it good.
What will this OS be? A computer without any useful functionality?
    Not Interested.

  • Well I might consider it later on, but not out of the box. for example Google chrome is cool but no way would I trade in firefox for Chrome. I’m starting to like linux atm, but I want to see how Google’s new OS is first before I would jump right in with both feet.

Please reread Google’s post on Chrome OS again.

Just to make things really clear:
Google Chrome OS will be for netbooks AND desktop PCs.

“Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems.”

    @Dan London:
Are you a Microsoft agent spreading FUD?
    [I’m half-kidding.]

  • This is a GREAT IDEA! I don’t know if anybody remembers but Oracle, and others, talked about this many years ago. It’s nice to see it finally come to fruition.

PS: If you go for it, quadruple check the reliability and speed of your Internet Connection 🙂

  • anyup

thanks for share , nice word

  • likly make your comment….thanks for my comment

  • I would buy one 😀

  • Well first of all i want to used that operating system & if i found it as easy as Microsoft windows xp than only i can move ahead.

  • Johan

This seems like it could have the eventual potential to be a competitive rival to mac…. its simple and more affordable. seems to thinks so too. The article and comments also have some interesting views on the google empire as a whole…

  • I prefer a debian light os. Google chrome os is very limitated.

  • I will try a Chrome OS, but I am a fanatic of Linux – Fedora it is free too and it is a very very useful OS. I use it as on my web server as on my notebook. It has a new version every a half year, and become better and better.

  • Since my chrome crashed i havn’t use it back .. Waiting if bug fixes
