It is not very often that Google introduces news features to its Google Reader service. This is despite the fact that Google Reader is perhaps among the widely used Google product. But that was before, as Google is putting more social networking/sharing feature to Google Reader.

So now, users can start finding people with public shares items and when they found an interesting Google Reader user who is generous enough to share their items. You can also subscribe to these shared items and it will appear on your Google Reader main page. To find people with public shared items, users can use Google Reader’s new people search feature or browse for users via their name., location or topic.

Aside from those features, Google Reader now allows sharing of public items to specific groups of people only. Users who maintain their Google profile can now add link from the Google Reader page to Google profile. After adding this link, users can start following other users publicly shared items. In addition, Google Reader now also allows rating of shared items.

  • I like all the new features. I dont use the Google Reader interface, but i use Feedly, and i love beign able to 'Like' articles and see who else i follow has liked them. I hate going to a really simple site and discovering i can do anything with the information. If i share an article or like it, it then goes to FriendFeed, and then it goes out to Twitter, and then to Facebook, one simple click on an article im interested in and it is delivered to all the other outlets.

I dont want to simply read an article, i want to be able to spread it around and encourage others to see it and begin discussions.

So to me google reader is simple, it does what i want in a nice way. If it didnt have the funcitonality it does, it be more complicated for me.

The Like feature is a distraction for me. Google: give us an option to muzzle!
  • And I just noticed the Like button next to the Share...
  • This from my view is taking the essence of a simple reader which isn't wise. There are loads of other sites all the articles that are available as feeds here are already shared. Adding social network would cluster it too much and people would eventually lose interest in reading , for which it actually is meant. They should have rather kept it simple.
  • I hope they give people an option to disable the Google Reader 'like' feature soon. It's terrible and in the way. Google reader isn't Facebook. It's a newsreader.
