Beginning Wednesday, Yahoo’s online mapping service will now include the ins and outs of 34 European countries. In an Associated Press report via Yahoo Tech News, the upgrade Yahoo Maps will be utilizing new mapping software that could feature more landmarks that would help US travelers find their way through the European cities that they are visiting.
With this upgrade Yahoo is hoping to get back into the online mapping market which is currently being dominated by Google Maps and AOL’s Mapquest. Yahoo Maps user base has declined by 5% to 29.4 million. Yahoo is hoping to recover from this traffic slump that’s why the need for an upgrade on its mapping service.
With the inclusion of European cities on its mapping service, Yahoo! may gain back some of its user base but honestly, the mapping interface is dull and unappealing compared to Google maps. Although the interface maybe similar in some fashion, still Google’s over all simplicity and professional look is what attracts more users into its fold. This is what Yahoo Maps should try to develop on aside from expanding its coverage to include European cities.
