AOL’s New Local Search Beta

AOL Local Search is in Beta 2 testing and integrates CityGuide, MapQuest and AOL Search technology all into one interface which uses a lot of the features available in Yahoo Local, Google Maps, and Ask.com’s AskCity such as pinpoint mapping, drag & drop features and driving directions.

AOL has also integrated local events form CityGuide and local headlines from AOL News Channels into the search results, while advertising is provided by AOL partner Google AdWords.

AOL Search is doing a better job of integrating their partnered content with internal services to provide a realistic search outlet for their users.

They get the shaft a lot of the time for only being a Google partner, but the truth of the matter is that they use Google’s index as their foundation, but have built their own house upon it with search additions such as AOL Snapshot and their multimedia search capabilities.

  1. I tried a couple searches, and got “no results” almost all the time for searches I know work just fine on Google Maps.

It looks like the obsolete technology they are using (MapQuest) makes this product a non-starter.
