4 Things That Are Horribly Wrong With Your Ad

After reading that Curtis (50 Cent) is going to sue an advertising company for $1 million – for illegally using his image in advertisements that encourage viewers to “shoot the rapper” to win a ring tone, an xbox 360, or another item, and inspecting it for a few minutes – I realized that the illegal use of the image was the least of the problems with the ad.
Just for contextual purposes, here is one version of the ad:
And a brief list of other things that I see wrong with this ad that you can learn from and differentiate in your own ad:
1. It promotes violence – Just the fact that you have to shoot someone to win an award should ring alarm bells in your head.
2. It is racist – Because the advertisement promotes violence and is racist you should be able to deduce that it is probably note endorsed by Microsoft or whatever brand or product they are advertising, which reduces its legitimacy.
3. It is not unique – Even if you manage to ignore the two points mentioned above, another thing to note is that the advertisement is not only spammy in appearance but it is also not unique. Other versions of the ad ask you to shoot a criminal, zap a bug, point out a celebrity, and so on, to win an item, making it look more like an organized scheme and less believable.
4. It is misleading – The ad gives the appearance of having no fine print and tries to fool the gullible person into thinking that performing the incredibly easy task will actually win him something, whereas when you actually do it you are presented with another page where the advertising company makes you go through numerous other hoops and tries to sell you other things before you can have any hope of winning a free anything.
As you can see, using the rapper’s image is the least of the advertisement’s problems and it is rather shameful that someone would create an uproar over the use of an image more than the promotion of racist violence and the trickery employed by the advertisement.
