Was going through my referring keywords today and noticed a rather odd term sending in Google traffic; “sex video.”
Knowing that I’ve posted stories about YouTube in the past and some of the steamier search engines out there, I checked the Google results for this term.
Clicking over from my analytics program, I was taken to this URL: http://www.google.com/search?q=sex+video&safe=active
I then noticed that this site is ranked #5 on Google for “Sex Video” but a difference in the URL than my normal Google results: &safe=active
Seems that with SafeSearch activated, we rank #5 for Sex Video but when I tried the URL without the safe variable, we were ranked #12 behind a bunch of porn spam and other crap.
I’m guessing that there are now a bunch of middle school kids finding this site in Google now, so I better be extra careful in terms of what we link to.
I’m also thinking that it would not be a good thing to be blocked by Google when the end user is using SafeSearch (if you’re not a dirty site). Comparing the results, the only non-porn sites blocked were Quizilla & Wikipedia.
Yes, Google is blocking some Wikipedia pages in SafeSearch.

Wikipedia has rode to prominence with a large boost from google. The interlinking nature of their huge site has nature rank power in the google algorithm. It also a site free of google ads. I’ve often wonder whether google might not take steps to depreciate Wikipedia in search results. Sounds like this has started.
