Interesting news that Yahoo is looking at the Western New York area as a home for its new datacenter, which in my opinion is a very good idea for Yahoo and will assist the Buffalo area in terms of much needed jobs in the tech sector, and makes sense for Yahoo.
Why does housing a new datacenter 3,000 miles from Sunnyvale make sense?
- Like I said, like Detroit, the Buffalo area needs the investment
- Buffalo area Orleans and Genesee counties, which are apparently at the top of Yahoo’s lists, are COLD … and the weather will naturally cool the datacenters
- New York Governor David A. Paterson “will do whatever he can to get the company to locate” in the Western New York area
- Yahoo likes clean energy, and a lot of it, which can be provided
- The Bills or Sabres could get a new sponsor
Anyway, in a time when the Northern US is being hit hard due to closing factories and mismanaged industries, it’s refreshing to see that such a location is in the running for new Yahoo technological advancements.

I think this is a great idea in priciple. Niagra Falls produces huge amounts of clean energy. The problem still is that it’s close to major cities which need that clean energy. A better solution is to locate these data centers close to the remote power producers. Installations like hydro-electric dams, wind farms etc.
Here in Ontario, Canada there is a huge opportunity for such a location. A nuclear plant on the shores of lake Huron generates much of the hydro used in Toronto. The wind farms at the lake cannot even get their power on the grids back to Toronto. The transmission lines are just full. I bet Yahoo could swing a deal to get cut rate, green hydro in such a region.
thankks you
