Yahoo Expands Free Mail to 100 MB

Yahoo has beefed up its free e-mail service with 25 times more storage following its rival Google’s plans to offer 1,000 megabytes (1 GB) of free storage through its Gmail service.

Yahoo has also freed up millions of previously claimed e-mail addresses. All of Yahoo’s free e-mail accounts will be upgraded to 100 megabytes from Tuesday, a move spurred by Google’s Gmail service, which has remained in a test phase since early April.

Yahoo has been offering 4 megabytes of free e-mail storage, although some people with accounts opened several years ago have 6 megabytes of free storage. Aiming for new users and to cleanse out their inactive ones, Yahoo has decided to let people begin signing up for addresses that have been unused for years.

Yahoo says it will improve the tools used to search its e-mails, integrating Yahoo Search Technology into its email functions. “The objective here is to make storage quotas irrelevant to users,” said Senior Vice President Jim Brock. Brock also added that Yahoo Mail will tie in more Yahoo-branded services, such as Photos and Messenger.

Yahoo Mail has recently felt pressure to offer more user friendly functions and email storage space ever since Google unleashed their pans for GMail with 1GB of free store in exchange for the user allowing Google to serve AdWords advertisements which are targeted to each email’s content. Google has come under privacy group fire for the GMail advertising structure, but for the most part, users feel that GMail’s functionality and storage space make up for having to view the advertisements.

  2. I think google cannot make competition with yahoo so far email is concerned as Yahoo has already big users and Gmail has not been able to make it public yet

I have been using Yahoo mail for years. Just got my upgrade yesterday, and all I can say is … so what!

I have been using this account as a throw-away address for so long and that is all I will use it for. It is so riddled with spam, that it makes it impossible to use it for anything else. Maybe if I sign up for another account and gaurded it better…but somehow I don’t think that will do any good because most of the problem with spam is coming from Yahoo mail accounts. If they cannot control their own house, then I cannot put too much faith in their service. As it is right now — I get about 300 pieces of mail in my bulk account every day, plus about 30 in my inbox. You report those 30, and it begets 40 more it seems.

I liked the old 4 meg storage (including bulk). It was my way of bouncing spam back, because I would let it fill up and max out. When I needed to sign up for something requiring my email address — I would clean some mail out of the way so it could be sent to my Yahoo inbox. Life was simpler back then.

Well… the 100 MB mail account is indeed good… i’ve been using yahoo mail for many years and its been my primary contact until last year when i got fed up with its junk mail…. i’ve used up all the filters and blocked addresses….

i totally agree with dodger that in order to yahoo actually lead in mailing industry has to work on somehow stopping all the spam that comes thru… i have closed my bulk mail folder so i don’t get anything there…. but i get around 30 junk mails in my inbox…. and i can’t select them as spam as the box for spam is full!!!

    cheers
