Travelzoo Pays $1.8 Million for Fly.com Domain Name

Travelzoo purchased the domain name fly.com for $1,760,000 in cash today via Sedo domain brokers. According to Travelzoo, the company intends to use Fly.com for a new information Web site to be launched in February.

We are delighted to acquire fly.com for our new offering, said Brian Clark, senior vice president and general manager, search products, Travelzoo. The name is a perfect match for Travelzoos renowned approach: simple, fun, and world class. Where others see doom and gloom we see opportunities to serve travelers and advertisers with innovative approaches to finding the best values in travel.

In an economy which has hit the travel industry fairly hard, I’m wondering if Travelzoo ended up getting fly.com at a very good price, and whether it would have went for more one year ago. Other newsworthy domain name purchases in the past have been Business.com, which was initially sold for $8 million and when Teknosurf bought the Advertising.com doman and then rebranded the company.

Any good articles on the linking value of social websites? Any chance Google will ignore those sites from rankings?
