[...] Search Engine Journal: What’s wrong with the Amazon A9 Search Engine. “A9 has been getting a lot of flack around the search world lately as being Amazon’s version of the little engine that never could. There was a lot of news around the A9 launch and they were one of the first ‘almost’ top flight search engines to venture into mass personalization and are also innovators in local search and pay per call advertising. A9 however seems to have the Amazon spin-off curse of side projects by the mega ecommerce entity which launch to a hail of fanfare, only to be put on the backburner or pushed to the side later down the line, never accomplishing the task of gathering public interest.” [...]

I'm not very resistant to change. I try new search engines every once in a while, and I use the ones that are most helpful to me. Lately I've switched from Google to Technorati for a lot of searches.

A9, though, is just lame. I just went to test it out (I'm always willing to give things a second chance) by trying to find a hardware store here in Burlington, VT. First I typoed "hardward," so it got confused and offered me a place in New Hampshire. Then I corrected myself to "hardware," but by then it had forgotten entirely where I am and it tried to find me a place in Massachusetts. Google (for comparison) gave me the right answer cleanly with an intuitive search ("hardware near burlington, vt"), and offered to correct my spelling when I fed it a typo. Also, A9 is ugly.

I think this article goes to show that the searchers are finiky, tend to stick to the popular offerings for no other reason than convenience and habbit. The lack of compelling reasons (sorry brand name is not compelling) seems to suggest that A9 has suffered for the same reason Yahoo! doesn't have 45+ percent market share. It's also the same reason Microsoft had the only PC operating system for years. User resistence to change.
