Google Reader Tracks Feed Subscribers

Google Operating System posted yet another ground breaking informative Google Hack on finding the Google Reader subscriber numbers for any feed (which is subscribed to via Google Reader).

Google Operating System is not an official blog, but the personal Google enthusiast blog of Ionut Alex Chitu. Although the numbers of Google Reader subscribers do not seem to be exact, the stats are pretty close to Feedburner stats on Google Feedfetcher numbers.

Some blog pieces revolving around the news include:

  • Gabe Rivera’s list of top feeds and popular 2.0 blogs and their Google Reader numbers on TechCrunch
  • Lee Odden’s Top SEO Blogs according to Google Reader (we’re #8)
  • Matt Cutts adds tips on Google Reader tracking

Expect more hacks which add Google Reader subscriber numbers to web popularity metrics such as Alexa or Bloglines stats to forecast the number of total subscribers to a blog and blog popularity.
