Google GMail to hit 3.5 GB Storage Space

March 16th, 2007 by Loren Baker, Editor | 39 Comments

Anticipation is brewing for Google’s big April 1st (April Fools) announcement this year and since GMail was first launched on April 1st, some are expecting Google to make some big changes.

It appears however that Google has already made some tweaks to GMail, in the form of storage space.

Google has updated the GMail code to calculate 5 years into the future, stopping at 3.47 GB.

Niraj Sanghvi made the find:

The Gmail login page updated to reflect new targets for the amount of space each account gets. The counter on that page is always counting up, and you can actually see what it is counting to.

With the new update, here’s the new space targets and how many days until that much space is hit by the counter on the page:

2800MB: Already reached
2835MB: In 18.22 days
2980MB: In 384 days
3125MB: In 749 days
3270MB: In 1114 days
3415MB: In 1479 days
3560MB: In 1845 days

The last target is 3560MB, which is about 3.47GB of space. But that’s over 60 months (5 years) away!

Google might aswell offer 10 Terabyte for email hosting.. it doesnt really matter to them as must people will never use more then couple of MB for their mailboxes and those who will end up using more are likly to keep the emails static therfor no extra Bandwidth will be used in saving them.

This doesn’t surprise me one bit, Gmail is an awesome mail program by far the best around at the moment

  • Sog on Mar 16, 2007 at 8:47 pm

…And if people don’t have enough, then they can always just open another gmail account and store emails there.

  • Andrew on Mar 17, 2007 at 3:13 am

i don’t see why i would ever use 3.47 gigs of email space but its still cool

  • sylv3rblade on Mar 17, 2007 at 3:22 am

Andrew, you obviously haven’t heard of Gmail Drive:
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_gmail_drive/
Its useful for backing up files like when you need to reformat and don’t have enough space. Sucks if you’re on dial up though

  • firefox junkie on Mar 17, 2007 at 4:15 am

Even better than GMail drive, especially for those of us fortunate enough not to have to use winblows, check out the GSpace Firefox extension. Gives a FTP interface to use Gmail account for diskspace.

I know Google has been lenient about the whole gmailfs stuff, but until they say that they won’t try to stop it, I won’t rely on it.

That being said, I have my personal mailbox on my own Exchange server, and since 2000 I’ve only accumulated 1GB of mail - I don’t delete much, I spam filter, and I’m on several mailing lists. 3.5GB is whole lot of e-mail.

At work, it’s always been different (more e-mail) but that’s usually because of automated alerts and such things.

I wonder how much Google “oversells” the gmail storage. Like an ISP and bandwidth, surely they base their available mailbox storage on the fact that most people will use only a fraction of their available space.

How do you get this numbers? I find in the code, but don’t understand whats the initial line code function:

    var CP = [
    [ 1167638400000, 2800 ],
    [ 1175414400000, 2835 ],
    [ 1207033200000, 2980 ],
    [ 1238569200000, 3125 ],
    [ 1270105200000, 3270 ],
    [ 1301641200000, 3415 ],
    [ 1333263600000, 3560 ]
    ];

  • beeman on Mar 17, 2007 at 4:45 am

    Hi Ed,

i guess the numbers are timestamps, in Epoch format. So 1333263600000 will be
    Sun Apr 01 2012 09:00:00 GMT+0200 and 1207033200000 is Tue Apr 01 2008 09:00:00 GMT+0200…

So each line stands for a space limit on the first of april… :)

It surprises me a little that Google will take that long to get there. I must admit as well Gmail rules!!!!

Thats tooo slow… I just posted about the increased used storage size and the need for extra storage. Gmail promised I never have to delete an email again, but it seems they won’t stand for it :(

  • Keith on Mar 17, 2007 at 7:37 am

Well, I don’t think Google is expecting to change that code easily. This may just be a rumour.

  • Vladekk on Mar 17, 2007 at 8:17 am

    To all you pathetic smallfolk!
If you don’t use 3 GB of space, that doesn’t mean everybody else don’t.

Does Gmail filter spam better than Yahoo mail?

  • Franco Polo on Mar 17, 2007 at 9:43 am

Much bettter spam filter with GMail. I switched in about august and I don’t have to worry about spam at all anymore.
With Yahoo, at times I had as much as 5 spam messages per day ending up in my inbox.

Google seems to become industry leader. Any news about Google launching any Operating System ?

  • beauty on Mar 17, 2007 at 10:58 am

but rediffmail has given out unlimted space!

  • Steven Eckelberry on Mar 17, 2007 at 11:11 am

I love it! Thanks for the great article.

  • Brian Reed on Mar 17, 2007 at 1:19 pm

I started using Gmail exclusively about a month and a half ago. I have a lot of art files passing through my account, so after about 6 weeks of use I’m already seeing this at the bottom of my inbox:

“You are currently using 293 MB (10%) of your 2829 MB”

So, yeah, hearing they’re ramping up storage space makes me happy. Also means I can maybe put off paying for an upgrade for awhile.

  • Whiteboard on Mar 17, 2007 at 1:23 pm

It’s like the long tail argument for web content, but this applies to your email and other junk. The more of that stuff they have in their, the more likely you are to get online to find it and the more ads that will be served up while you are looking for it. Google is officially taking over the world.

By the way, there have been cases of Gmail filtering legitimate mail as spam recently, so be aware and check ur spam folder frequently.

  • Agashka on Mar 17, 2007 at 1:44 pm

In 5 years, by the way we hit 3.5GB, google servers gonna have bigger hard drives, so i beleive they will update their counter before 5 years , and in 5 years, Ggmail gonna have over 5GB per users.

  • The Pandora Effect on Mar 17, 2007 at 2:12 pm

haha! but who’s gonna need so much space for emails? corporate users already have their personal secured accounts.

    The Pandora E.

  • Loren Baker, Editor on Mar 17, 2007 at 2:22 pm

Well, that sounds like a challenge to be Pandora Effect. I think that given the growth of multi-media and the option of using Gmail to store large files such as videos, documents and images, 3.5 gb could be fairly easy to fill up, especially after 5 years.

  • bora on Mar 17, 2007 at 8:52 pm

I think in 5 years there will be much more space mainstream e-mail providers would offer. I say at least 5-6 gigs for Gmail.

  • sean on Mar 17, 2007 at 9:19 pm

I wish gmail would offer a way to sort by attachment size. I’m near my limit due to lots of video & audio files being sent my way. It would save tons of time (and space) if I could say “show me everything over 2 meg…or just sort by size.

  • vagmi on Mar 18, 2007 at 1:00 am

3.47 gigs ought to be enough for anybody.
    There, I said that. :-)

  • Raj on Mar 18, 2007 at 10:24 am

I think…Google is going to give UNLIMITED storage facility…….

  • Andy Beard on Mar 20, 2007 at 3:08 am

Jubii is apparently allowing 10GB but I haven’t been able to gain access yet due to a broken captcha. They also have lots of problems with their ToS.

I have to clear out my gmail every month or so, and it could be a lot worse if I sent all my database backups there by email.

  • Richie on Mar 21, 2007 at 8:29 am

I’ve been using Gmail for nearly 2 years, which is my primary email account, only 81 MB used so far…I don’t think I will have used 1GB in 10 years :p

  • adam on Mar 21, 2007 at 3:34 pm

I’ve been using Gmail for over 2 years now and i find it very good. I get alot of spam each day and just about ten of them ends up in my inbox.

My favorite function is that I can connect many email addresses. I currently use three different.

“You are currently using 134 MB (4%) of your 2830 MB.” Ands that’s well over 3000 mails and a lot of attachments.

  • Heather on Mar 31, 2007 at 2:46 am

I have been using gmail since it opened, and I have used up all of my storage. I have repeated contacted gmail and even would pay for extra space, BUT GMAIL NEVER RESPONDS!

Everyone knows the gmail account I have used for years, and it difficult to open another account to try and get others to email you at it. I have tons of files I have stored that is great when I travel. I travel a lot.

People keep sending to the old email address. Gmail said you will never have to delete emails. They are wrong.

I hope they increase the storage.

I suggest if you plan to use gmail, have a back-up
in case you go over your storage, because you will never get them to answer any of your emails or contact you to even discuss helping you get more space.

Once you start using gmail, you will eventually have to delete so be prepared.

  • search engine sword on Apr 5, 2007 at 1:26 am

I have been using gmail 2 years,it is very cool ,fast ,simple. hope it better.

  • DrSicko on Sep 3, 2007 at 6:06 pm

Mediamax is now offering 25 GB of storage.
Still can’t find an easy way to upload my data even though they have a software for that matter. Kinda difficult to use, but the idea is simple amazing.

  • scott on Nov 12, 2007 at 4:32 pm

I use Gmail exclusively for personal email & no longer use the email address I had thru my ISP (I have it delivered to Gmail) & I love it. I love being able to upload documents to Google documents (though it messes with the formatting, unfortunately)

I took a look at rediff as one of the earlier posts suggested. In their terms of use they specifically say that they will use the info you provide for tarteted email (a/k/a spam). Eeks. I canceled out of it before completing the registration.

Another document service, which will soon is Zoho.com.
