Yahoo Music Unlimited Integrated With Yahoo Music Engine

Yahoo Music Unlimited Integrated With Yahoo Music Engine

Yahoo released Yahoo Music Unlimited today which is a paid music subscription service which charges $6.99 a month, $.79 per track or $60 a year for unlimited access. The new Yahoo Music service is more of a direct threat to Napster and iTunes than Yahoo has ever offered with its Broadcast.com and MusicMatch offerings. Yahoo has now integrated Yahoo Music Unlimited download service into the Yahoo Music Engine, which used to be Yahoo Music.

An article published by CNET this May stated that Yahoo “plans to introduce the music search engine within the next couple of months, according to a source familiar with the service. The specialty engine will let people search on an artist’s name, for example, and retrieve all the available songs from other music services, as well as album reviews and band information from Yahoo Music.” It only makes sense for Yahoo to verticalize their search technology into the music track and integrate pay on demand or subscription based music download services.

Well the future is now as Yahoo Music Engine is pumping out download suggestions and integrating itself with the Yahoo Music Unlimited service. Don’t expect what’s live now howver to be a final result. Using the web based version it took me 3 clicks to find the downloads I can purchase via Yahoo Music Unlimited via a search for “wilco” on Yahoo Music Engine.

Is there revenue opportunity beyond music downloads? Integrate Yahoo Stores into the mix and behavioral targeting and Yahoo should be able to deliver ads for relevant t-shirts, posters, concert tickets, and whatever else to users who are downloading groups of songs or videos from specific bands.

I’ll be downloading and testing out the full version of Yahoo Music Engine tonight and hopefully getting up a review this week, in the meantime, please check out an “unbiased” review by one of the people behind Yahoo Music Engine, Ian Rogers, on his Yahoo 360 blog entry : Why You Should (or Should Not) Use the Yahoo! Music Engine (great find by Barry at SERoundtable).
