I'm experiencing something similar to the -950 problem at the moment. My site was ranked in the top 3 for my target phrase but suddenly the homepage dropped to around 730 in a day. I submitted a reconsideration request and it shot back up to number 2 after it was processed. 5 days later it dropped to 730 again. Interestingly the way in which Google indexes my site shifts during these 'blackouts'.

This is a very real phenonenom. One common symptom (which I have) is that the first page from my site presented in the SERPs will usually be a page other than the homepage, whereas during the high ranking periods it was always the homepage for my target phrase.

I currently have no idea why this is happening to my site, which makes the whole process of dealing with the problem far more annoying.

I think that caffeine will probably take care of many of these questions. It seems to me that when it comes to linking, Google does not penalise per say but moreover devalues the link so that it has no value. This is why you cannot link spam your competitors.

These penalties definitely exist. I'm sure many more do that we aren't aware of as well.

Google says that you can't hurt your competition, but I find it hard to believe that a brand new domain surfacing with 10 000+ in-links in the first month after registration won't somehow have a negative effect - even if only by drawing closer attention to gray hat practices on the domain. If authoritative sites can get away with more engine-gaming techniques, perhaps those sites that attract negative attention will get away with less; sort of like in a court of law.

I agree with Modulus, I find un-dated posts very frustrating.

Google itself says that you cannot do anything to hurt your competition. I have heard this argument used a lot with regards to inbound links as if they could invoke a penalty then it would be just as easy to "Google Bowl" your competitors by throwing up a whole of dodgy, spammy links to their site.

It is so confusing to read these articles with no dates mentioned. How will I know when these penalties existed, esp when referring to something as volatile as the Google ranking algorithm? ;)

I believe these penalties are more vulnerable to new sites. When a site gets authority, a growth of links doesn't have a negative effect.
