How a Single Experiment Can Give You Huge Business Exposure

SMS Text

As per current trends in the search industry, spammers and link builders who mainly work for search engines results rather than users are a thing of the past. Like designers, the search industry is looking for creative minds who can give companies natural exposure instead of artificially built traffic. If you are an SEO it’s your duty to generate such ideas and techniques to get users/customers talking about your brand on diversified platforms.

Therefore, in this article, I am going to share my experiment that I did for my company. Before moving on to the main idea, I want to discuss its brief history and what compelled me to do this experiment. Actually, the whole concept was born in the light of The Great Seth Godin, he discusses the actual meaning of brand in the following words:

“A brand is the set of expectations, memories, stories and relationships that, taken together, account for a consumer’s decision to choose one product or service over another. If the consumer (whether it’s a business, a buyer, a voter or a donor) doesn’t pay a premium, make a selection or spread the word, then no brand value exists for that consumer.”

Before starting my branding campaign it was important for me to analyze what a brand actually is. According to Seth Godin, to make your company a BRAND, it’s necessary to analyze what your customers are expecting from your services and their past experiences. So from this clear cut definition, I derived a simple BRAND formula:

Simple BRAND Formula

BRAND = Complying with Users’ Expectations + Positive Reviews by Users

If a customer is choosing your company,  it’s obvious that he is expecting something from it, and if you meet his expectations he will likely drop a positive review and the same case applies to millions of users. That’s how you start transforming your company into a BRAND.

Although the experiment was accidental, this one suggestion has led my company towards a huge exposure. At that time, there was an in-house project named “Pie-Register” which is a WordPress plugin for customizing WordPress registration/login page that allows the user to enhance the default registration form by customizing it according to their own needs. We added that plugin to the gallery and suggested adding a logo in the banner. Since WordPress is a popular platform where you can gain huge traffic placing a logo really worked.

Logo as a Branding Weapon

Logo is the most powerful weapon for branding purposes because it gets glued to the users’ mind and whenever he sees the logo he is reminded of the brand. We placed our company logo on the banner so whenever a user sees the logo he is reminded of our company logo. Planting the logo in the user’s brain is the essence of branding.

Putting the equation of BRAND in this case:

BRAND = Complying with Users’ Expectations + Positive Reviews by Users

Complying with Users’ Expectations

We already knew worth of and its conversion rate. Therefore, it was really important to give our users the best product in order to comply with their expectations. First, we discussed users’ expectations and why they would prefer this product over other alternatives. Then we released the final outcome in the shape of Pie-Register. We crossed our fingers for a positive response from that experiment.

Positive Reviews by Users

We got a marvelous response from that experiment, its rating was between 3.5 to 4, which is not bad at all and around 97,000 users have downloaded the plugin. This reflects that we have met the users’ expectations and through this we have achieved their trust.

The above report shows that 97,012 users have downloaded our plugin. Surely, they must have observed our logo too and at that time our analytics clearly showed us that many of them visited our website and went through our other web services. Now you can judge that how a single experiment has given us an exposure of around 100,000 users – WOW! Additionally,  leads start pouring in. So this process went sequentially from an experiment to lead generation.

Sharing Reviews and Thoughts about their Experience

The story hasn’t ended at 97,012 users. It still has a long way to go. How? Those who have tested Pie-Register have also shared their thoughts on diversified platforms including social media, forums and on other websites as shown below in the screenshot.

If you want to survive in this industry, you need to be creative in order to gain natural links and popularity. This is just one technique that I have discussed. What techniques have worked well for you? Share them in the comments below!

“the search industry is looking for creative minds who can give companies natural exposure instead of artificially built traffic.” Thank God they are. I remember one meeting when I was just coming up, I was tying to sell my SEO services, and the customer actually had another competing SEO company join us. Today I would just walk out, but I had to compete with a guy who was clearly a spamming, blackhat, manipulator of rankings. ( I needed the work back then).
He kept explaining black hat techniques, one after another, I kept warning the customer of the dangers, and he acknowledged it would fail, but then they had another way to spam. The spammer won out, and I lost out on some much needed income. The spammer was cheaper, and offered really fast results. So thank you Panda, and Penguin!!!

I have also experienced the same thing in the past. But these spammers have no more scope in future as Google is restricting Panda and Penguin on them. Focusing more on earning links can benefit you rather than generating tons of artificial links. That’s what I believe and having a successful experiment of branding and links earning as discussed in the post compelled me to rely on the same strategy.

    Hey Abbas,

Many points written by you are really good and useful, but you can’t avoid seo methods like on page & link building because if you are focusing so much on content, design & Logo of your website but not doing proper on page or off page seo, you can’t rank well or can’t get huge traffic.

I have seen blog – seo mark, it has very simple design and not so much website structure but still he ranks at the 1st page for its 80 % keyword in the search engine. So On page seo & link building can’t die. Thanks.

Thanks for your kind words. I strongly agree with your point that Onsite and offsite are important. In my post I have just given an example to show how you can brand your company and earn natural links. I did not mention that this technique will boost your rankings for a purpose because i beleive in business exposure and in turn natural link earning.

As far as the ranking factor is concerned, I also agree that on-site structure matters a lot. You can’t compromise on it.

I agree with Gautam in that on page and off page factors are vital. I think once we’ve looked after these factors and polished them to Google’s wish list, the next step should be working on the right content marketing strategy. This is a heads down job that requires patience but the results are slow but stable.

    • Gautam

Thanks Shamim, I always comment after proper experiment and I know without seo any design is failed to get huge traffic.

  • Kasim Aslam

Great article Abbas! I love your point about using your logo as a branding weapon.

    • Abbas Rajani

Thanks Kasim! I am glad that you like it. In my opinion, a logo acts as a catalyst to evoke an emotional response.

    I also agree with Gautam.

See, in the internet marketing all the activities level should be equal, you can’t say with 100% sure to improve you ranking or traffic to do with specific activity only. I am sharing my experience here. I have many big clients and we work for them. After Google panda and penguin update, i researched and prepared new strategy and applied on 1 client to check the result. Now within 2 months i got 1 position rank on 1 page for that client’s website after last penguin update as well as most of the keywords on first page. I just built most of the link on his brand name instead of to build the links on keywords. So this the my own experience my friend.

I believe Abbas has clarified his point above. He has only highlighted how a certain method can help you in earning links naturally.

This does not mean that all other online marketing factors (Onsite and Offsite Factors) are irrelevant or not significant ūüôā
