Google Maps Lets Users Follow Businesses to Receive Latest Updates

Google Maps is introducing a new way for users to keep up with local businesses.

Users can now follow businesses in the Google Maps app, which is similar to following Facebook pages.

After following a business, users will receive all the latest news in the “For you” tab. News items may include events, offers, and other updates.

“Ever wandered by your favorite store just to find out you missed a great sale? Or maybe you’re always the last of your friends to find out about the new hot spots opening in town…

Those using Google Maps for Android can now follow places right from the app. Rolling out now, just search for that coffee shop you love or that clothing store you’ve been meaning to pop into and tap the “Follow” button.”

As the announcement states, this feature is currently only available on Google Maps for Android.

It was not mentioned whether the feature will be rolling out to iOS at some point, although it’s certainly not unusual for Google to bring new features to its own operating system first.

Listings for Places “Coming Soon”

In another update to Google Maps, users will soon be able to connect with new businesses before they officially open.

Places that are opening soon can create a free Business Profile that will appear to people up to 3 months in advance of opening.

Locations that are opening soon will be indicated with an opening date in orange text.

This feature is rolling out over the next few weeks.

Businesses interested in having their coming soon locations shown on Maps and Search can get started by claiming their Google My Business listing.
