Google AdSense, YPN & Porn Ads

Over at Search Engine Roundtable, Barry Schwartz covers a DigitalPoint thread about porn (or adult content) ads being show within Google AdSense ads on publisher sites.

Barry gives his two reasons why adult ads should not be shown within Google AdSense:

There are two reasons why these types of ads should not be displayed on Google’s AdSense ads.

(1) There should be no content that would contextual match such type of adult ads. It is against the program policies for a site’s content to contain any “pornography, adult, or mature content.” So without the content, the ad should not match.

(2) Also, I believe it is against Google’s own policy to display adult oriented ads in AdSense. This is in order to protect the publisher’s readers, audience and reputation.

I have not experienced this Google AdSense porn problem hands on, but I have seen many Yahoo Publisher Network ads being served here on Search Engine Journal for sex toys, products and questionable dating sites (and I’ve also received complaints from readers).

Sure, such products have a time and place for reaching the correct audience and I’m sure it’s not a behavioral targeting fluke as one story in our archives seems to be a hotbed for pervs who search for the word ‘sex’ and other terms in Arabic versions of Google.

YPN and Google, if these ads are going to slip through your filters or be shown due to some kind of targeting, why can’t your companies provide a search result style family filter where publishers can choose to block all porn, gambling or ‘questionable’ ads from their sites in the same fashion as AdBrite?
