Google Acquires Fabric, a Mobile App Development Platform

Fabric, one of the most popular mobile development platforms, has been acquired by Google. The company made the announcement on its blog today, but did not disclose anything further about the acquisition other than to say the Fabric team will be working directly with Google’s Firebase team.

In addition, the suite of tools developed by Fabric will be making their way over to Google. This includes the Crashlytics reporting system; Answers, a tool which helps app developers interpret data more easily; and Digits, a phone number authentication system. Crashlytics and Digits were recently recognized as being the #1 SDK’s for app stability and analytics.

Since being launched in 2014, Fabric says its tools have been used by over 580 thousand mobile developers, and have reached over 2.5 billion mobile devices. Its platforms will be combined with Google’s Firebase “to make the best mobile developer platform in the world for app teams.”

According to Google’s announcement, Crashlytics is expected to become the main crash reporting tool for Firebase. Further details about how the two teams will work together will be revealed after the deal is closed in the coming weeks.

Those who currently use Fabric, or any of its other products, can continue to do so without making any. Though use of the tools are now subject to new terms of service.
