Bloglines Has Stopped Updating Feeds – Make a Backup

Update: Bloglines seems to active again, the plumber must have been busy. Still, making a backup won’t hurt.

My favorite RSS Reader Bloglines has stopped updating the feeds. It’s a weird experience to see all those blogs you have subscribed to and none has a new post. It can’t be the Oscar event I thought.

From the bloglines forum I understand this non-updating has been going on for some time now and there’s even a rumor mentioned in this forum that Ask, the owner of Bloglines, intends to discontinue the service.

Whether that’s true or not (It would surprise me if it was true), it made me realize that it was time to export/back up my feeds in case this hiccup continues in order to be able to move them to another webbased RSS Reader.

In case you’re a Bloglines user (and you have likely come directly to this website as otherwise you probably won’t read this) and like to export your feeds, here’s how.

  1. Login to your Bloglines account
  2. Click the tab “Feeds” in the left panel
  3. Click the “Edit link” at the top left of the panel
  4. Scroll down in the left panel and at the bottom, under “Extras”, you’ll find “Export Subscriptions”
  5. Click “Export Subscriptions” and save the “export.opml” file on your desktop.

You can import this file in other RSS readers like the Google Reader, Newsgator, Rojo or others that I’m not aware of.

It never hurts to have a back up, although not having one probably also saves me a lot of time.
