BitTorrent & Hollywood Halt Pirated Film Downloads

Internet piracy and the BitTorrent technology has almost become synonymous in the last couple of years. Software designer Bram Cohen developed the technology with the aim of making it simpler for software developers and other companies to distribute large sized files on the internet without putting too much load on their servers. However, the capabilities of this p2p technology are being more used for sharing copy-protected content on the internet.

The agreement between the Hollywood and Bram Cohen would prevent him from letting his site being used to locate torrent files leading to pirated content on the internet. This would kill yet another source for such files for the web users who use torrent sites for finding illegal content. The deal means that the BitTorrent site would have to remove Web links leading to illegal content owned by the seven studios that are members of the Motion Picture Association of America.

Cohen said in the statement: “BitTorrent Inc. discourages the use of its technology for distributing films without a license to do so. As such, we are pleased to work with the film industry to remove unauthorized content from bittorrent.com’s search engine.” MPAA Chief Executive Dan Glickman added: “They’re leading the way for other companies by their example”. The agreement with Cohen however does not prevent the web users from finding relevant links from other sources on the internet.
