Google to Offer 1Gbps Broadband Internet Speed

Google is at it again. Dreaming the impossible dream and planning to achieve something no matter what that cost may be, or even perhaps whether it is going to be a boom or fail.  Believe it or not, Google wants to become one of the world’s provider of the fastest broadband internet service which it plans to accomplish through fiber networks.

Google is planning to build and test ultra high speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the U.S. The grand plan? – to provide Internet speeds that will be more than 100 times faster than what Americans are enjoying right now . Well, how does 1GB/sec fiber-to-home connections at a very competitive price  sound to you? Sounds good? Then hope that you become one of the first 50,000 to 500,000 people in America whom Google plans to initially offer this service to.

The specifics of Google’s grand plan of providing the fastest  Internet connection to American homes include:

  • Next generation apps: We want to see what developers and users can do with ultra high-speeds, whether it’s creating new bandwidth-intensive “killer apps” and services, or other uses we can’t yet imagine.
  • New deployment techniques: We’ll test new ways to build fiber networks, and to help inform and support deployments elsewhere, we’ll share key lessons learned with the world.
  • Openness and choice: We’ll operate an “open access” network, giving users the choice of multiple service providers. And consistent with our past advocacy, we’ll manage our network in an open, non-discriminatory and transparent way.

To kick off the project, Google is sending out Request for Information to identify potential communities.
