Google Reveals Fast-Growing Search Terms of 2007

Not to be confused with Google Zeitgeist’s year-end top searches, which has yet to be released, Google revealed today a list of the “fast rising U.S. search terms” for 2007. Marissa Mayer, VP of Search & User Experience at Google, made an appearance Tuesday morning at NBC’s “Today Show”, where she revealed, not surprisingly, that the “iPhone” was number one on the list.

If you’re not quite sure how Google arrived at this list, allow me to explain. According to Google’s explanation last year, they looked for searches that were popular in 2007, but weren’t as popular in 2006. And by popular they mean those “explosive queries, the topics that everyone obsessed over”, not things like the weather that everyone searches for everyday anyways. So what they did is they looked at thousands of this year’s most popular searches, and then ranked them based on how much their popularity increased compared to last year.

2007’s fasting growing search terms in the U.S. were:

1. iphone
2. webkinz
3. tmz
4. transformers
5. youtube
6. club penguin
7. myspace
8. heroes
9. facebook
10. anna nicole smith

This afternoon, at 1:30pm PST Marissa Mayer will formally present this list again through an online webcast available here at The webcast will also include information on how to use Google Trends, followed by a live Q&A session. The video will also be available on-demand at the site after the live broadcast.

Within the past 24 hours, Google has also released year-end search trends for various countries throughout the world, including Australia , New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Check it out. It’s pretty interesting to see what the hot searches are in the various parts of the world.
