Overall, it is a fantastic model and does Amazon well. While there are some retailers who have implement similar programs, the main reason more companies/retailers don’t copy this model is because subscription based products can be difficult to manage. You need to take into account everything that goes into it like billing, customer service, product development, any sort of rebate processing you might have, etc. In addition, building a subscription based product means you need to take your eye off your core business for the time being, which many businesses can’t afford to do.

Thanks for the thorough article. One of the better ones on +1. I think people should take +1 seriously just looking at the amount of resources and effort Google is putting into it.

IF +1 fails, you may have lost some of your effort and time (still, built valuable contacts in the process) - but if it does succeed, you will be already ahead of most of your competition. Personally for me, the potential benefit outweighs the risks.

Yp is pretty much dead......even the site is painful to use and is geared to selling ads and not serving the user. I find other online directories going the same way. They simply do not add value over Google or Bing so why will the live on? Only an agressive salesforce keeps these paper dinasours around for now.

Our listing with Verizon's SuperPages.com back in '06 did generate traffic and trackable sales when I managed a website that sold imported scooters. The ROI was the lowest of all traffic sources, but the link was valuable not only because of the authority, but also because it was regularly scraped and republished by spammers.

Advertising was very different 15 years ago, and you had to be in Yellow Pages, they knew that and they exploited it by charging ridiculous amounts of money....

Hurrah for the internet changing that!

I think that Google, with Google+, is trying to capture a bit of Facebook's market and extend it a little by allowing for extending reach beyond "friends" to their "circles". Psychologically it is brilliant because there will be less apprehension about connecting with a business based on a similar set of interests. When Facebook added its "groups" and business pages it is essentially doing the same thing but the ability to separate Friends, family, acquaintances is where Google+ has excelled. Here is my take on Google+. <

Excellent Article Todd! The social interaction implications of these additions are huge and I learned a lot from this piece. Thanks! It gives us a clearer idea moving forward that social interaction and marketing is only going to increase as well as evolve over time.

Thank you for sharing Todd, I think this target marketing is both beneficial to customers as well as the providers of goods and services. It seems the customers want to get what they want as fast as possible and this makes it easier.

Google doesn't offer an opt-out option, because the wouldn't be able to (atleast legally) track you and or provide the collected data to government agencies, marketeers, and God only knows who else...
Currently weaning all Internet activity from Google in order to protect my privacy from "big brother".
You can't be dumb enough to believe that Google would provide any ostensible evidence of their tracking and/or governmentally controlled/mandated data collection...
