Search has fundamentally fractured, moving far beyond a single text box into a multimodal, multi-platform ecosystem. While the industry is currently fixated on AI Overviews as the primary culprit for declining outbound traffic, the reality is that the “zero-click web” is not a sudden phenomenon born from generative AI. It is the culmination of a decade-long evolution in user behavior.
According to SparkToro’s 2026 clickstream data, a staggering 68% of Google searches in the U.S. now end without a click to the open web, continuing a relentless upward trajectory from 49% in 2019. This acceleration reflects a profound shift in how audiences discover information; search now happens everywhere. In fact, this is precisely why the term “Search Everywhere Optimization” was coined by Ashley Liddell back in 2023.
Users instinctively bypass traditional engines for visual, community-driven platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, seeking immediate, high-context answers through varied modalities. In response, Google has aggressively fortified its walled garden with instant answers to prevent users from migrating to these decentralized networks. As intent fragments across diverse platforms and media formats, relying solely on traditional SERP visibility is no longer viable; modern strategies must embrace a comprehensive audit of search, community presence, and product operations to capture audiences exactly where their intent originates.
From Keywords To Conversations: What Google’s AI Mode And AI Overviews Data Reveals
We must first understand exactly how user behavior is shifting (and Google has already provided critical clues by sharing its initial usage data for AI Mode). Google’s recent I/O 2026 data on AI Mode provides a clear blueprint of this evolving user behavior. AI Mode is already surpassing 1 billion monthly active users, the metrics reveal a rapid shift toward conversational and multimodal discovery. The average AI query is now three times longer than a traditional search driven by action-oriented commands like “explain” and “summarize,” and characterized by the notable use of the pronoun “I,” signaling a deeply personal, dialog-driven interaction rather than a simple keyword lookup. With follow-up questions rising by 40% month-over-month and more than one in six searches in AI Mode now incorporating voice, image, or video, it is evident that audiences are no longer just hunting for blue links. Instead, they are engaging in complex, multi-sensory conversations that demand immediate, synthesized value.
This conversational shift isn’t just theoretical; it’s highly quantifiable. For instance, in the first major study analyzing the impact of AI Overviews on Spanish media, which I recently co-authored alongside MJ Cachón and University of Barcelona researchers Mari Vállez and Carlos Lopezosa, within the CUVICOM project framework, we discovered exactly how search length and question modifiers dictate generative responses.
Our data showed that query complexity is a direct predictor of AI activation. Searches containing four words trigger an AIO 48.1% of the time, and together with three-word queries, they account for nearly 70% of all AI-generated results.
The intent behind these longer queries is fundamentally interrogative and heavily weighted toward evergreen content (75.2%). We also confirmed that keywords using the classic “6Ws” of journalism practically guarantee an AI summary, with “why” triggering an AIO a staggering 92.3% of the time, followed closely by “what” (85.7%), and “who” (68.4%). The takeaway is clear: We are no longer optimizing for fragmented nouns; we must now structure our content to directly answer complex, timeless human questions.

In the same research, we also uncovered a clear dichotomy: Generative AI and breaking news operate in completely separate ecosystems. AIOs appear in 34.6% of evergreen searches but practically vanish during immediate current events (1.1%), barely co-occurring with the “Top Stories” module (1.4%). Notably, 43.6% of analyzed SERPs display neither feature, representing a massive “blue ocean” where traditional organic ranking remains highly effective.
Equally surprising is the brand visibility paradox. We found that AIO presence does not align with traditional traffic leaders. For instance, 20 Minutos achieved a 38.9% AIO presence on brand-related queries, while the overall traffic leader, El Español, sat at just 11.1%. This proves that massive visit volume doesn’t guarantee a dominant Share of Voice in the generative era. While ecommerce sites might fear zero-click AIOs, for media outlets, triggering these answers is a powerful validation of E-E-A-T. A user searching for your brand already intends to visit your site, but securing that AI citation cements your publication as an authoritative entity in the new search landscape.
We are all deeply familiar with the traditional triad of search intent: informational, navigational, and transactional. However, this static framework is fracturing into much more complex, and nuanced behaviors. According to Google’s newly released research on AI Mode usage in the U.S., the platform is drastically expanding the scope of human needs it attempts to fulfill.
People are no longer just looking for a link; they are actively using AI Mode to make decisions, plan trips, organize tasks, learn concepts, generate ideas, compare options, and create content. We are witnessing a profound shift where search is evolving from a passive information layer into an active utility layer.
As Ezra Eeman, Director, AI in Media at WAN-IFRA, insightfully pointed out, when we analyze these emerging AI-driven intents, they bear a striking resemblance to Dmitry Shishkin’s, another media consultant, and former BBC journalist, renowned “User Needs” model for media. Just as Shishkin proposed that publishers must move beyond merely reporting facts to actually educating, inspiring, and providing perspective, generative search engines are now attempting to satisfy those exact same profound user needs directly within the interface.

In fact, Google is now explicitly redefining the boundaries of search intent to align with this new reality. The search giant currently argues that audiences are leveraging AI Mode across five distinct, action-oriented pillars: to explore, to decide, to learn, to create, and to do. This new classification officially confirms the transition from a passive information directory to an active utility layer. By explicitly targeting these verbs, the modern search engine is positioning itself not just as a gateway to the web, but as a dynamic assistant designed to fulfill complex, end-to-end user needs directly within the SERP. But how does this shift toward an active utility layer actually manifest on the screen? When users enter the SERP with the intent to explore, decide, learn, create, or do, their visual interaction with the search interface fundamentally changes.
A recent eye-tracking study conducted alongside Diego Criado and MJ Cachón, provides empirical evidence of this new behavioral reality, identifying a profound “attention-to-action gap.” The research reveals that certain elements act as passive “black holes” of attention, for instance, visual components like Images and Product listings, as well as the AIO “Explore Further” button, capture up to 100% of user visual engagement but yield an astonishing 0% click-through rate. Users merely scan them in milliseconds.
In contrast, the true “converters” are the areas where deep reading, and active decision-making occur: the core AI Overview block converts at 86.4%, while traditional organic links remain the undisputed kings of the SERP, capturing a massive 95.5% click-through rate. This eye-tracking data confirms that as generative features fulfill basic exploration, peripheral elements become mere visual noise, leaving the core AIO text, and high-ranking organic links as the only effective spaces to capture deliberate, high-intent traffic.

The New Metrics Of Search: Attention Vs. Reciprocity
Having reached this point, and fully understanding how this shift in user behavior is disrupting CTR and the very future of search, it is abundantly clear that we must fundamentally rethink our key performance indicators. We do not need to abandon traditional metrics like clicks and queries, but we absolutely must complement them with qualitative indicators that measure depth rather than just volume. For publishers and content strategists, this means embracing the vital transition from mere “reach” to true “belonging,” as Heiko Scherer, founder, and CEO of tchop.io, so aptly put it.
A concept recently championed by Sean Griffey, co-founder and former CEO of Industry Dive, is the ultimate metric for media companies in today’s connection economy: reciprocity. As Griffey insightfully points out, our current dashboards are perfectly designed to measure audiences up to the point of consumption, tracking when they merely read or subscribe, but they completely fail to measure true fandom.

Griffey said “Attention is transactional. Reciprocity is sustainable. It’s a moat.” Reciprocity asks a much harder question: Would your audience feel an instinctive desire to respond if you asked for help? Do they feel deeply connected enough to support you even if there is nothing to gain for themselves? While the creator ecosystem tests this connection constantly, media brands must also learn to do the same, finding non-scalable, highly manual ways to gauge true reciprocity.
It is time to pause, actively listen to our users’ evolving needs, and understand exactly what we must build for them. Whether that means delivering a sharper editorial product, crafting content specifically designed for learning, nurturing a vibrant community to connect in, providing a space to create, or deploying a strategy to scale an audience, and forge unbreakable loyalty.
