In her examination of website referral numbers, Marie Haynes suggests that GEO represents a misplaced investment for digital teams.
By reviewing data across 145 million sessions (over 100 websites), the article demonstrates that visits from ChatGPT represent less than one percent of the volume delivered by traditional Google search. The sample size is strong, but as with anything in SEO and organic visibility, mileage varies.
I did my own follow-up study looking at 108 million sessions from Jan. 1 to Nov. 2, 2026 (over 57 websites), and came to a similar finding that total AI traffic amounted to 0.66% of the total. This means that for every 1,000 users from search engines, (trackable) AI sends seven.
This does vary a lot between websites, with some seeing 20-25 AI users per 1,000, but the numbers are still relatively low.
The findings also reveal that people arriving from ChatGPT convert at about five times the rate of typical searchers, yet the conclusion maintains that marketing teams should ignore directly looking at optimizing for AI because Google still provides the vast majority of total sales.
While the recorded traffic numbers are accurate, the strategic conclusion rests on assumptions that fail to match the real habits of people who use modern AI tools.
Judging the business value of conversational tools by counting immediate site visits applies an outdated measurement system to a new information environment, as users are behaving differently with AI interfaces than what they have done traditionally with a standard search engine.
Neglecting GEO as a principle because incoming sessions appear small ignores the fact that conversational answers shape purchasing choices long before any link receives a click, while it also overlooks the commercial value of visitors who convert at remarkable rates.
How Traditional Measurement Misses Real Influence
The foundation of the argument depends entirely on website analytics sessions, which register zero value whenever an answer engine satisfies an inquiry without sending a person to an external domain. This reporting method breaks down because conversational platforms exist to answer complex questions without requiring people to browse through lists of web pages.
As documented in coverage on zero-click search dynamics, automated summaries satisfy informational demand directly on the platform and reduce traditional outbound journeys. When a procurement team researches software packages or a shopper looks for reliable touring bicycles, the entire comparison takes place inside the conversation window.
A company buyer might spend half an hour discussing system security, pricing tiers, and practical trade-offs among several competing vendors. If an engine explains your product with precision and presents it as a sensible choice, that buyer needs no immediate link click because the required knowledge is already in hand.
Several days later, that same individual opens a standard web browser, searches for your brand name, and completes a demonstration booking. The analytics platform credits standard organic search with the resulting transaction, reinforcing the mistaken belief that Google generated the entire customer journey when the real choice occurred inside the chat interface.
Ignoring conversational optimization because direct referral traffic seems negligible resembles dropping brand sponsorship because people decline to click on road signs. Concentrating solely on immediate referral links creates an analytical blind spot, because the work of optimizing for generative engines focuses on brand placement within the data sources that modern engines trust.
Analyses into GEO principles highlight how modern engines prioritize clear entity relationships and structured knowledge over traditional ranking signals. If an engine ignores or misrepresents your company during this silent research phase, that eventual conversion via traditional search will never take place.

The True Worth Of High-Intent Visitors
The research by Haynes contains a striking detail, showing that visitors arriving from ChatGPT converted at almost 14% while standard search visitors converted at 3%. Dismissing this huge performance gap simply because total volume remains modest values raw visitor numbers over genuine commercial results, which conflicts with sound marketing economics.
Standard search traffic contains substantial waste, including accidental clicks and casual browsing from people who possess no intention of purchasing anything. Pouring effort into capturing massive organic volume often produces diminishing returns, filling site logs with casual readers who quickly leave without taking action. In contrast, industry reports on B2B citation behavior confirm that buyers engaging with generative syntheses click-through primarily to confirm factual details and evaluate final purchase considerations.
A person who conducts an interactive evaluation inside a conversational engine and then follows an outbound reference link exhibits exceptional commercial intent, having already moved past basic research to understand product strengths and weaknesses.
For B2B suppliers, high-value consultants, and specialized retailers, aggregate visitor volume remains an empty vanity metric. A firm that gains several enterprise clients from a modest stream of qualified conversational referrals earns far more profit than one attracting thousands of random visitors who generate nothing.
Directing resources toward an audience that converts at such remarkable rates represents sensible commercial planning, so the right response to a 5x conversion advantage is to study the reasons behind that success and ensure that your organization appears whenever serious buyers seek recommendations.

The Broader Horizon
The structure of the internet continues to transform, and the analysis correctly notes that autonomous systems will alter future business activities across digital channels.
Turning away from GEO because referral numbers appear modest misunderstands where commercial decisions occur today. AI tools have reshaped how shoppers and corporate teams research and purchase products, and the influence of this behavioral change remains invisible on standard traffic dashboards even as it appears within the exceptional conversion rates of those who visit.
Treating generative engines as an unimportant diversion surrenders your presence at the point of decision, leaving the field open to competitors who recognize that influence matters far more than traditional clicks.
