Google’s Maile Ohye: HTTPS for AMP Functionality Now Required

Maile Ohye of Google kicked off our last SEJ Summit of the year, taking place in New York City. She first spoke about creating mobile-first content, since mobile searches have surpassed desktop. As she spoke more about mobile, she lead into sharing some information about Google’s AMP project and shared that having an HTTPS website is going to be required for PWAs and much of the AMP functionality on pages.

Maile reports that there are currently 150MM AMP pages currently in the Google index, with about 4MM new pages being created every week.

Surprisingly, 99% of AMP page loads are less than a second.

Other Stats From Maile

  • Mobile traffic has surpassed desktop.
  • 20% of Google queries are by voice. Google app understands speech in 55 languages. It understands that it’s a question instead of only recognizing specific keywords.
  • 2-3 second page load times have the lowest bounce rate.

She also reminded us that the mobile algo update for interstitials (e.g. intrusive updates, like popups that take up most of the screen) will take place Januar 10, 2017.

When it comes to key takeaways from Maile, she recommends:

  1. Map your common customer journeys
  2. Find commonalities in their needs
  3. Determine where falling short
  4. Calculate ROI for various options

Maile stated that there’s going to be another announcement about the mobile index soon, and John Shehata, the VP of SEO for Condé Nast will be talking about AMP stats and tools today, so keep your eyes peeled on their blog and SEJ to learn more when it comes out!
