125 Social Bookmarking Sites : Importance of User Generated Tags, Votes and Links

December 6th, 2007 by Loren Baker, Editor | 104 Comments

The positive effects of social bookmarking for publishers of news sites, blogs and other web sites is outstanding. Social bookmarking can introduce the sites that you own or you like to others with relevant tastes, can drive traffic to your site, and valuable backlinks.

Some social bookmark sites like Propeller.com pass on link juice, while some use the NoFollow attribute. But do not let the use of NoFollow fool you, the search engines are looking beyond the incoming links from social bookmarking sites to gauge their value to their search indexes. The external metadata compiled via user generated descriptions, tags, titles and categorization is incredibly valued by the search engines, as in the same philosophy as anchored backlinks, descriptive content about a web site defined by the users of that site who are not associated with the marketing or coding of that site, can be extremely powerful in gauging the importance and relevance of the content and tags which are used on that site.

Bookmarks show how a site is perceived, and when these sites allow voting, they also show the engines or whatever classification system which monitors voting, how people feel about the quality of the site. Furthermore, social bookmarking can introduce a site to the search engines, as in some cases, people may find and bookmark a site or a site’s internal pages before a search engine can find those pages via another form of inbound link.

Monitoring social bookmarking services like Del.icio.us, StumbleUpon and Ma.gnolia can help search engines in multiple ways by:

  • Indexing Sites Faster : Humans bookmark sites launched by their friends or colleagues before a search engine bot can find them.
  • Deeper Indexing : Many pages bookmarked are deep into sites and sometimes not as easily linked to by others, found via bad or nonexistent site navigation or linked to from external pages.
  • Measuring Quality : Essentially if more users bookmark a page, the more quality and relevance that site has. A site with multiple bookmarks across multiple bookmarking services by multiple users is much more of an authority than a site with only several bookmarks by the same user.
  • External Meta Data : Users who bookmark sites tag them with keywords and descriptions which add an honest and unbiased definition which is created by the public and not the owner of the site.
  • Co Citation : Social bookmarking sites tend to categorize sites and pages based upon the tags used by humans to describe the site; therefore search algortihms can classify these sites with their peers.
  • Number of Votes : Similar to the number of bookmarks, the more votes a page receives on Digg or Reddit, the more useful that information usually is. If the same page receives multiple votes across multiple social news voting sites, the higher quality the site.
  • Categorization : Like Co Citation, categorization can help define the subject of a site, therefore better helping the engine address searcher intent.

To help share the wealth of social bookmarking, I’ve put together a list of 125 social bookmarking sites, some of which are very popular and others which are newer or somewhat unheard of. But besides targeting the major social bookmarking and tagging sites which are listed above, you will find some diamonds in the rough which are niche oriented or treated well by Google and other search engines. I’ve found that one such surprise is Searchles which is regarded as an authority by multiple search engines and bookmarks within Searchles sometimes show up quite high in some branded organic results.

I love social bookmarking as I find it to be one of the easier methods to spread the word and backlinks for any particular site. One thing I would mention that wasn’t touched upon above is that you really want to refrain from using the same description at each bookmarking site. Titles can be similar as there’s a good possibility that they would be naturally similar across several bookmarking sites. Same with tags. The description is where individual user generated content is published which can differentiate real, natural efforts from SEM’ed efforts.

  • Brendan Picha on Dec 6, 2007 at 11:28 am

Many of these sites are social news sites, not so much bookmarking sites

  • Loren Baker, Editor on Dec 6, 2007 at 11:33 am

There’s a fine line Brendan. This list focuses on pure bookmarking, social bookmarking and social sharing sites. A lot of the Pligg sites are spunn as social bookmarking sites.

If you can save a site or ‘bookmark’, share it, add tags, add comments and descriptions and vote… it’s more or less still social bookmarking.

  • Manish Pandey on Dec 6, 2007 at 11:35 am

    Very useful post Loren! Thanks.

Social bookmarking has become an integral part of any business’ online presence.

  • Brendan Picha on Dec 6, 2007 at 12:18 pm

I think you’re right about the fine line. For me, the difference between social bookmarking and social news is that with social bookmarking you can post a URL, title, desc, and tags. With social news you can post a URL, title, summary, and tags. The voting aspect can be applied to either but this started on the social news side with Digg and morphed it’s way over to social bookmarking.

You can bookmark anything but social news tends to cater to stories, blog posts, articles, and press releases.

  • Bob Angus on Dec 6, 2007 at 2:16 pm

A fantastic list. More importantly, you’ve provided much greater insight into how and why search engines perceive a sites quality based on social bookmarking. I have always focused on active participation and hope for organic growth. Now I can more closely tie my bookmarking efforts to my SEO efforts.

  • Loren Baker, Editor on Dec 6, 2007 at 2:19 pm

Great point Bob. And to clear things up, this isn’t only good for building links and Google SEO … but people actually search on bookmarks sites to find information … so in a sense, if you’re ignoring the major bookmarking sites, you may be ignoring some of your potential audience, subscribers or customers.

  • Resonate on Dec 6, 2007 at 8:24 pm

An excellent list you have created, i definatly would never have such a straight mind to create such a detailed list. well done =)

  • Otis Gospodnetic on Dec 6, 2007 at 9:19 pm

    Loren:

I agree with one of the above comments - this is a mixed list, and in my opinion this mixing is bad and contributes to user confusion and mixing of various bookmarking vs. voting sites. This mixing is the source of misunderstanding of what bookmarking is and results in a lot of self-promotion, “internet marketing”, and that is often seen as spam.

I run Simpy, so I know this first hand. Help educate people, please. Digg is very different from a bookmarking site like Simpy or Ma.gnolia or Furl.

I also can’t believe you missed Simpy - Simpy has been around since 2004 and is pretty high up by some metric - check Read/WriteWeb posts about social bookmarking services, Compete, etc.

  • Vagner on Dec 6, 2007 at 9:21 pm

  • Jon Clark on Dec 7, 2007 at 2:18 pm

Thanks so much for the list! I use social bookmarking many times to give a new site a kick-start or to quickly spread the word for a time-sensitive subject - you provided at least 15-20 sites I was unaware of! I would be curious which sites on the list actively use ‘no-follows’. I’m also curious what your recommendation is on a good ‘number of tags’ for a particular bookmark. Should it be limited to 1 or 2? In other words does it get a bit spammy with say 5-10?

  • steven on Dec 7, 2007 at 8:30 pm

    Thanks for your sharing,Loren.

  • Otis Gospodnetic on Dec 8, 2007 at 12:59 am

    Loren:
Look at Jon Clark’s comment above. He is clearly not bookmarking. He is clearly looking to promote something, most likely something of his own. He is even wondering how many tags to use. He clearly doesn’t know that bookmarking is really primarily about one’s own interests, and only secondary about sharing. People he truly use social bookmarking for bookmarking do this automatically.

This is why Digg, Propeller, etc. should NOT be mixed with Simpy, del.icio.us, Ma.gnolia, etc.

  • Jon Clark on Dec 8, 2007 at 2:14 am

Otis, of course I am using social bookmarking as part of my overall marketing mix. I would argue that many people reading this post are doing the same. That being said, I do use these bookmarking sites for just that - bookmarking sites, blog posts, etc. that are in no way linked to myself or any business I represent or call a client.

The reality of social bookmarking is … if users don’t find what I bookmark interesting, it will end up only being for my interest anyway. I cannot force anyone to bookmark something - even if I want them to.

And, just to clarify, I asked about the ‘tags’ because I DO NOT want to be spammy. I didn’t ask to see ‘how many I could get away with!’.

When bookmarking sites that personally relate to me, my primary reason is to get them out of the Google sandbox - I primarily launch new sites. Even Loren mentions the ability of social bookmarking to help achieve that.

Others please chime in … is this wrong?

  • Jonathan on Dec 8, 2007 at 3:14 am

That is really great list of Bookmarking sites.

It can be pain in the neck to fill forms for all these web sites, I have been looking for auto bookmarking tool, where I submit a URL and it gives us filled form or offers us to login / signup other way around.

One of my fellow suggested me http://www.tagenie.com

As its name sounds, Tag Genie :) It really does work like a genie.

Simply add Tagenie plugin to your site/blog and you can submit a URL to 43 social bookmarking web sites.

If someone else has something great like this, please share it

    Thanks

These sites are becoming more important to search engine rankings. According to WebPro News “recently Google seems to have placed more weight on buzzy, timely resources, which comes from news sites, social bookmarking, and often social networks and blogs.” Since posting my site on various of these resources http://www.southfloridarentals-homesales.com/ I have jumped to the first page on many search engines for my keywords.

    Hi Loren

Thanks for including http://www.easyBM.com, the private bookmark site in this social bookmarking list.

EasyBM boasts of one of the most compact page showing all your favorite online sites and includes features like collapsible groups and multi-column, multi-row layout.

This also might be the only one site where others cannot see your bookmarks as opposed to the typical social bookmarking site where your list is open to all.

    Thanks again!

There doesn’t seem to be all that much other than tons and tons of real estate blogs then the occasion zillow real estate site. I’m surprised if not shocked that there isn’t one. If not I’m going to go and try to create one this very minute!

Xerpi should be at the top of this list- bookmarking tool that lets you quickly & organically organize your favorites from any computer. Share your favorites with friends and get access to community public views. Works better than anything I have found, and compared to a normal linear list is a very easy system of drag and drop menus. Go to www.xerpi.com

I just came across a great toll which ties in with your post very well. Its called Toast Poster & here is what its about, I quote:

“Post Toaster is a time saving social bookmarking service which includes an option to select sites that do not support the nofollow attribute.

    How to use:
Click on the lion logo above and drag and drop into your toolbar. This is your Post Toaster bookmarklet for easy posting. When entering titles and descriptions you can enter up to four of each. Post Toaster will randomly pair them for you within each submission. You must check the checkbox to the right of the title and description fields to activate your data within the randomizer.”

You can check it out at the following URL: http://www.posttoaster.com/
