Gmail Now GoogleMail in the UK

Gmail Now GoogleMail in the UK

According to the BBC, Google has renamed their web mail in the UK from Gmail to GoogleMail. There were apparently some trademark disputes in England and Germany which led to the change in Deutschland, and now Google UK has followed suit.

GoogleMail may be about as blah of a name as, well, Google Talk, but now is just as good of a time as ever to make the change as Google’s plan to centralize its services with one Gmail or GoogleMail login is taking effect.

Independent International Investment Research, a London based firm, claimed that it started using the Gmail name for their own mail service two years before Google. There was no financial settlement between IIIR and Google, but it seems that IIIR had a strong enough case to force Google to rename Gmail in the UK.

Gurtie at ThreadWatch comments “not very catchy no [GoogleMail vs. Gmail], but heartening to see that sometimes David still beats Goliath – I remember checking the .co.uk domain on the day gmail was launched and wondering how long it would be before Google did a Stelios on them. Thankfully they didn’t.”
