MySpace Eyes International Expansion

MySpace Eyes International Expansion

MySpace, the ultra popular & ultra controversial social networking site owned by News Corp’s Fox Interactive Group, is looking to expand its US success into the European Union and Asia with the hiring of David Fischer as its UK and European Managing Director.

Along the lineup of highly targeted countries by MySpace include France, Germany and possibly India, expanding MySpace into Central Asia.

MySpace, a bit of a shake & mix between Google, YouTube, Friendster, Yahoo Mail and Match.com (without the fee), still seems to be growing in terms of popularity here in the United States and has become an intricate part of Fox Television and the FX Network’s online marketing and TV to net integrated marketing.

With nearly 100 million registered users and growing at a rate of around 250,000 new members a day, MySpace has grown beyond its music fanbase and teenage roots to the essential online profile, meeting and hangout spot. MySpace has become The Place to keep up with your friends online.

More from the Financial Times :

The company will on Tuesday announce that David Fischer has been appointed as managing director for the UK and Europe. Mr Fischer, 40, was founder and chief executive of Xlantic Group, a music marketing company, and has worked at Pressplay and AOL Europe.

Mr Fischer, who will be responsible for negotiating with television and music content owners to develop local versions of MySpace, said the first foreign-language sites would be ready later this summer.

He is also looking for alliances with mobile operators to deliver content over mobile phones, an area where Mr DeWolfe predicted “significant” revenues. “I think most [mobile operators] think the killer application could be MySpace.”
