ICANN Blows Off .XXX Domain Agenda

ICANN Blows Off .XXX Domain Agenda

ICANN has decided to show the .XXX porn domain extension the backdoor (no pun intended) as Vint Cerf, Chairman of ICANN, Nasa Consultant, Father of the Internet and Google Employee, announced that the .XXX issue has been pulled off of the ICANN Board meeting agenda due to time constraints.

Has ICANN caved in to US Government pressure not to launch the .XXX adult site extensions (obviously the administration wants to keep porn in the unmanagable .com and .org extension sector)? No word. Additionally, no word on the future of the .XXX domain extension either as Mr. Cerf did not give any clues as to when the .XXX issue would be re-opened.

TechTree leads to the .XXX domain nixing conspiracy, rumor and scandals :

Rumour has it that Viviane Reding, EU commissioner, called Paul Twomey, head of ICANN, and threatened to withdraw all EU representatives unless the issue was pulled-off from the agenda. However Twomey denied that he had received any such communication from her. Interestingly, the EU has been mostly supportive of .xxx, with only Brazil and the US administration opposing the controversial domain.

Approval for .xxx has been denied on many occasions previously. First, when Pope John Paul II died; then, after the intervention of the GAC of ICANN; and finally following pressure from the American Government, which had been hounded by the American Family Association – an organization with close links to the Bush administration. “

No comment from the ICM Registry yet, who has sponsored the movement to ratify the .XXX extension. But for those who may question the reasons for adding such a domain category, ICM has laid out the proposed benefits of porn using .XXX domains:

* Online child safety and efforts to combat child pornography and other abuses will be promoted through best practice guidelines that will be promulgated by a non-profit, cross-stakeholder foundation. IFFOR will provide financial and other assistance to various online support organizations and will develop technology tools and sponsor education programs for parents and families.

* The online adult-entertainment industry wants to create an identifiable space with which its members can elect to associate themselves and wherein they can responsibly self-organize and create guidelines to promote credible self-regulation.

* The voluntary .XXX will facilitate and protect free expression rights – both for content providers and Internet users.

* Privacy, security, and responsible retail practices will be promoted to protect online consumers.

* The .XXX has the potential to regularize business processes such as search-engine functionality, privacy, identity theft prevention measures, and security.

* The .XXX creates a credible forum for representation and self-regulation where all stakeholders are able to discuss and actively respond to concerns about adult entertainment sites on the Internet.
