Grand Theft Auto, Porn and Free Publicity

Recent video game controversies heating up around the US Senate have SEOBook’s Aaron Wall thinking outloud about how much the controversy around Grand Theft Auto San Andreas and the porn hacks for it have helped to push the video game over the top when it comes to word of mouth marketing. Additionally, he did some searches on eBay for the non-Adult rating version of the game and found that bidding is heating up.

Aaron writes : Not entirely search related here, but some good marketing, etc. (and of course the games are fun). Grand Theft Auto : An uproar over hidden, sexually explicit scenes in the video game “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas” spread to the halls of Congress on Monday. How much marketing $$,$$$,$$$.$$ is THAT exposure worth? Games are already going for over $70 on eBay.

Well, the saying is that there is no such thing as bad publicity and this does even carry over in to the search engine field. Gary Price of Search Engine Watch Blog caught that the most popular searches on podcast search engines are porn related. Podcast.net lists its top searches and they’re nothing you’d want to let the kids listen to. From Gary : “It should come as no surprise that five of the ten search terms involve “adult” interests. Now, if NPR or the BBC would begin offering an “adult” podcast with comedy and music, the needs of all podcast searcherer and listeneres would be satisfied.”

Top 10 Search Terms at Podcast.net
1. porn
2. adult
3. npr
4. bbc
5. open source sex
6. comedy
7. erotica
8. pod porn
9. music
10. erotic
