Piwik has launched as an open source alternative to Google Analytics under a GPL license which tracks popular pages, referring keywords, languages and is open for developers to build their own plugins specifically for their web analytics needs. [Live Demo]
Similar to Google Analytics, Piwik uses a simple javascript embed to collect data and can be hosted independently on a separate server.
Since Piwik is open source, SEO’s can adjust it to fit their company needs. For example, publishing sites may feel that referrals from Digg, Google News and Reddit are more important than the basic search engines and set up their reporting to flag these referral trends first. Bloggers and affiliates may want to view the amount or quality of outgoing links and reference them with referrals and specific keywords, the possibilities are limitless.

Sounds great! But before coming to a conclusion, want to give a try with the source then I would better say whether its a real alternate to Google Analytics or not.

Since one of our Google Analytics accounts was hijacked and Google were totally ineffective at returning it to us we’ve been looking for an alternative.
