Listifieds : New Local Online Classifieds Site

October 25th, 2006 by Greg Sterling | 4 Comments

Listifieds is a very new classifieds site that was put together by two guys with “day jobs” in their spare time. Even though the content is thin, the site is impressive in terms of look and feel.

One of the co-founders said to me in an email that they were just going to offer the site in their local area, Bowling Green, Kentucky. But the response was so positive they decided to take the site national.

If you’re an entrepreneur, this sort of thing is very encouraging. It’s possible to set up a great looking site quickly and cheaply. If you’re an established media company this sort of thing can only fill you with frustration and loathing.

After all, how can two guys in their homes, with day jobs, set up a site that’s better looking and easier to use than incumbent media companies will billions in assets and classified revenues at stake?

I think they expanded way to early. They would have much better success if they stuck to their local market. At least until they had more listings there. Trying to grow a site like this to fast is a waste of time. I know, I’ve been there and done that.

Great Site Guys. People are ALWAYS looking for new advertising methods. Even Craigslist started somewhere.

Ah, they can’t even get enough volume locally to make the site viable. Most of the stuff looks like it came from their own closets - or that of their friends.
Readers don’t care about pretty - see Craigslist - they want content!

I think the site looks good, these guys seem to just be providing an alternative to some classified sites out there. Small towns can’t post on craigslist, which is a pain.
And yes some people don’t care about pretty, but others do. If you don’t try something you will never learn. Congrats guys on at least doing something.
