Yesterday, Google’s Matt Cutts announced on his blog that a new Google Toolbar PageRank update is on the way, and thatas part of the PageRank update, Google will be expiring some of the older [PageRank] penalities on websites.
Good news for sites which were hit with a PageRank penalty last year? In the comments (all 130+ of them) Matt lends some more info on the upcoming update: “No update to the way that new penalties are assessed; just the expiration of some older ones.”
Thanks for the update Matt, I think it’s hilarious that one of your commenters questions where you’ve obtained this information :)

Really. What a joke. Maybe he had good intentions but it shows you how out of touch he is with us regular folk who are down and dirty in goolge everyday.
Just throwing it out there without any explanations etc.
Oh and I thought his blog was a personal blog not a google announcement board.
And can you let him know that webmaster tools is broken?

imo he should be posting these kind of semi-official announcements on an official google blog… would be rather weird once he decides to move from google to another company. :P

Sushubh, your right it would be nice if it came from an official Google blog. But anyways meh on the topic in general.

When Matt speaks (or writes) people listen . . . that is the bottom line.

Sushubh, Matt wants it both ways. When it’s convenient, he makes official Google announcements, such as the pagerank update and the expiration of penalties. When it’s inconvenient, he refers to his disclaimer (and kitty photos) and says it’s a personal blog. It’s the Google way you know. They do they same thing in how they apply their penalties and interpret their guidelines. If there are AdSense ads on a page or it’s hosted by blogger, you can bet a site gets a lot more leeway to steal content, over-optimize, and generally look quite spammy than sites that aren’t part of the Google empire.
