Microsoft Bing Yahoo Partnership Supported by Search Engine Industry

As soon as this week Microsoft Bing may be powering the search results and advertising at Yahoo, and an overwhelming amount of Search Engine Journal readers support the move, which would establish Bing with an estimated 30% search market share and position a cooperative Bing & Yahoo as a serious competitor to Google.

Yesterday, upon the news leak that Yahoo & Bing may be coming to terms on an agreement which could be announced as early as this week, SEJ polled its readers on the likely possibility of a Yahoo & Microsoft search engine venture under the likely scenario that Yahoo will be powering Yahoo Search and YSM with Bing search technology and serving Microsoft AdCenter advertising.

Should Yahoo & Microsoft partner on search?

The SEJ reader response was overwhelmingly supportive of a partnership, and since our readers are predominantly search engine search marketing professionals, an early consensus could be that the search engine industry is behind the Microsoft Yahoo deal.

  1. The deal under discussion is supposedly about Advertising, not Search. That said, if Yahoo! abandons its own search technology in favor of rebranding Bing search it’s doubtful that will produce any long-term positive effects for search.

    The search industry does not tolerate brand death well.

  2. Right now, Bing has a lot of cool features but the results still are not up to par. Yahoo has a few less features but has a slightly better results.

    If they do join forces, they will have attained a 30% market share (Bing 10% + Yahoo 20%) which will make them a player on the field rather than a fan on the sideline.

  3. The market shares reported by metrics companies like Hitwise, Compete, Comscore, Nielsen, etc. are based only on estimated page views — number of queries performed. Those are meaningless numbers that don’t reflect what is actually happening with the search engines.

    Google’s real search market share appears to be about 1/3. Bing and Yahoo! combined seem to have about as much market share.

    However, combining both services will most likely erode their market shares — that is what happened when Yahoo! scooped up other search engines a few years ago.

    I would beg to differ on the fact that Yahoo and Bing have anywhere near the market share of Google.

    The two most important metrics for search engine market share are pageviews and number of queries performed. With that, could you to elaborate on what would be a more meaningful representation of search engine market share.

    It’s been my experience that the market share numbers provided by Comscore, Hitwise compete etc. for Yahoo and MSN/Live (Now Bing) are actually inflated.

    For the companies that I have worked for, large, small, new and old, Google has always provided about 80% of search engine traffic, Yahoo about 10-15% and Live/MSN (now Bing) about 5-10%. So, even if the Comscore numbers are junk, what really matters is where is your traffic coming from and I believe most SEOs will confirm the numbers above.

    One thing we are in total agreement on is the fact that if Mircosoft and Yahoo join together into one property, there will be some initial market share loss. That is, if they make the leap and change all properties into one i.e. Yahoo redirecting to Bing.com. The reasoning for that is, most Yahoo and Bing users are also regular Google users. I’ve used Hitwise and Comscore to verify this. These users typically have stuck to these brands for something that is really important to them like their Yahoo Mail or other niche features that have become familiar to them. Rebranding Yahoo into Bing will cut off that routine and force the user to learn something new, which might happen, or they will fully migrate to Google.

    Frankly, I’m not looking forward to the death of the Yahoo! brand. I remember what happened to search when Yahoo! killed off the brands it bought.

    It’s more likely that things are about to become ugly again than that happy days are here at last.

    Again, if these are obsolete, how would you measure market share?

    I think you misunderstood, you said

    I was saying that based on real data i.e. referrals to my clients websites, Comscore and Hitwise tend to inflate market share of Yahoo and Bing, and under report on the true market share of Google which is about 80%.

    Do you really believe that Google only has 1/3 of the market share? That’s ridiculous.

  7. The Unbearable Likeness of Bing: I’m not sure how Bing can expect to catch up to Google, even with the boost from Yahoo! when they don’t offer anything different or beyond what Google already does… *minus* such things as AdSense or Gmail.

    It is going to be a LONG uphill climb if Microsoft intends to put the fear into Google.

  8. I love it when an intricate, fiendish plan comes together!
    Here is the She-CEO of Yahoo (Carol Bats) and myself signing the final agreement to give Microsoft control over the entire backend for Yahoo’s entire search! Yahoo will handle ads, marketing, hosting and all that kinda’ crap, but we will be the ones in charge of the main product, SEARCH! I was so happy as I was signing this that I almost … well, I was happy!
    The She-CEO tried to put a good spin on Yahoo’s surrender, she said,
    “We never really liked search anyways! We are letting these people handle that stuff while we pursue the cool stuff ya’know!”

  9. We like adcenter for the great conversion rates of Bing’s traffic.. With Yahoo though we are forced to buy clicks from junk partners that send nothing but fake clicks.. It’s a daily job to monitor all the new bad-domains to block.. And you have to PAY for all that.. :P

    With the current merge of Yahoo and Bing let’s hope the new “team” will do it RIGHT by giving the advertisers the choice to pay only for real yahoo/bing searches.. just like Adwords and adcenter allow (for now?).

  10. This was reported a little early. I am looking at Jan 2010 for the switchover to take place. Yahoo has canceled their search submit program effectice Dec 31st 2009. Bodes well for the switchover in early 2010.
