Google has updated their Google Toolbar Pagerank as of about 1 hour ago, marking a New Year’s Eve PageRank update which should have a whole lot of web publishers and bloggers discussing their changes in PageRank over the New Year holiday.
Search Engine Journal’s Google PageRank stayed the same at PR 6, but we noticed immediately that IMBroadcast.com/s Google Toolbar PageRank is now a PageRank 4 (up from a PR 0 since it’s a relatively new site).
Sure, the PageRank which is shown on the Google Toolbar is not an accurate indicator of how Gogole ranks or values a site, and is only on of many factors which goes into a live and real Google PageRank, but it’s still some sort of indicator, and will always be so while it’s still around.
Webmasters are weighing in already on the change via Twitter :
- @gyutae crap… google just updated PageRank… WinningtheWeb.com went down from a 4 to 3.. and lost site links
- @JustinLoans: Google Pagerank updated today!! Anybody went up? 3 out of 4 of my sites went up woohoo
- @dragonblogger: Just found out my Poetry Blog received a Google PageRank of 2 today. Ironic since it has 1/10th as much traffic as my other 2 blogs

Well, to followup my Twitter message, I did notice that one page on my site (http://www.winningtheweb.com/im-top-blogs/) now has a higher PR than my homepage. 5 vs 3. Interesting.

wow. moved from a 0 to 1. Pagerank is like chasing a rainbow, you keep reaching for it but you just never quite get there.™

Oh my god….The page rank of mine dropped by a point.

PR 3 here ….but some of my sub-pages has PR 4..
Garry Conn on Dec 31, 2008 at 4:20 am
What is PageRank? I have been using Google Chrome so I have been oblivious of PageRank lately. LOL
Thanks for the update Loran, I checked my blog and back to a PR5 again… I am happy with that, but I often wonder if PageRank really has much value? Don’t get me wrong, I love having a PR5 but it just makes me wonder.
I was PR5 earlier in 2008, then went to PR4 and I couldn’t really see any difference. Today I am back to PR5.
garry egan on Dec 31, 2008 at 4:23 am
@ Garry Conn
PageRank is only an indicator of the ’strength’ ofthe page and is updated every once in awhile. Your SERPs will flux often as your page moves up in the ranks. PR is not a real-time ’score’. You’ll get properly ranked in real-time as your site’s progress improves.

Thanks for the article. It explains my Twitter post: “http://www.wordstream.com went from a GOOGLE Page Rank 0 to 4 over night! Not bad for a website that was launched 3 weeks ago. :)”
kiran on Dec 31, 2008 at 10:34 am
As far as my openion.PR is not having importance in now a days.Keyword positions and traffic is the main importance.
Website Design Orange County on Dec 31, 2008 at 12:05 pm
PR stayed the same, but our inbound links dropped by almost half five days ago!
Nick Stamoulis on Dec 31, 2008 at 12:12 pm
I agree Page Rank is not important at all these days…if you are looking for a measurement for your SEO efforts, look at visitors (and sales) generated to your website.
Tina Clarke on Dec 31, 2008 at 1:14 pm
Weirdly before the update my STANDING went from up and down on the second page to second place on the first page for google.com and first for google.co.uk for keywords expression web but my pr (which has dropped over the past months) remained the same. Frankly Standing is more important than ranking. I admit my updates have been more frequent over the past month than the rest of the year. Which just goes to show new content is a must. Found this via twitter btw… which i prefer over blogs as there is less to think about when posting.
garry egan on Dec 31, 2008 at 1:46 pm
@kiran It’s obvious you don’t monetize your sites then. PR is everything. Try monetizing a PR1 site and let me know how much you get per link…
Leanne on Dec 31, 2008 at 3:22 pm
As soon as I monetized, I lost PR. Ridiculous double edged sword. I was a PR6 at the beginning of 2007, started 2008 with a PR3 and start 2009 with a PR2. I have yet to advertise on the main pages of my site. Wish PR was related to search results - seems awfully off-kilter to me.
Amit Nyamtabad on Dec 31, 2008 at 3:48 pm
My homepage is still on with PR1 but some of the internal pages got some PR, I think that the update is gradual and will take over a week to complete.
James Dechvy on Dec 31, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Who really cares about noise like PR updates. Focus on being better at making money online.
http://www.mostexpensivedomainsold.com/ on Dec 31, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Mine dropped by 1 rank. I think for most sites, ranks came down. Google must have changed their algorithm.
garry egan on Dec 31, 2008 at 9:35 pm
@Lowes IS a CANCER Ted “Unibomber” Kaz called and he wants his rant style back.
@James Dechvy Because PR is often related to the amount you can charge for ads on your website. That’s why PR is important.
@awzm Incorrect! Facebook is a PR9 (as it should be)
@James So, is your brain. :)

Thanks for getting this information out. Because mine didn’t change, I wouldn’t have noticed if you hadn’t told me.
This is the third update where mine didn’t change. It’s frustration because I’ve worked so much on my blog during that time.
I do comments on dofollow blogs and write articles that link back to mine.
My search traffic has increased much during that time. I guess that’s what really matters.
Warmly,
Linda P. Morton

Doug Heil on Jan 1, 2009 at 8:58 pm
Why are you contributing to this PR craze Loren? You know that Google loves this stuff as it gets people to talk about it, but why does this really mean anything in the large scheme of things? Does it? I don’t think so. Only Google knows the real PR for any page. The only real reason they bother to do any updates at all is for all the PR (public relations) they receive for doing so.
The question I have for all the posters above and those on Twitter is this: How’s your referrals from Google? Have they changed at all because of what the green bar shows? If not, why do you care about it?
cohnsey on Jan 1, 2009 at 10:08 pm

garry egan on Jan 2, 2009 at 2:08 am
For all the PR haters, ask yourself this question:
“Would the owner of this eBay auction be able to charge as much if the PR was 4?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270324940073
”
NO WAY.
PR is a heavy factor is determining the value of a website based on a neutral 3rd party. People trust Googz and trust their methods (even though it can be a headache sometimes for SEO professionals.)
The only people who whine about PR are those who don’t have it.

Good luck to everyone that cares about PR! I think it’s a good indicator of what’s going on.

Doug Heil on Jan 2, 2009 at 10:47 am
Hi garry egan; Your articlechecker.com has one bid on ebay….. is that bid from you? lol
Let me explain; the PR of that site has zero to do with one bid on ebay. I’m thinking your posts must be a joke. :)
To all others; keep having your wishful thoughts about pagerank toolbar stuff. It simply shows the extreme lack of knowledge and the BS surrounding the SEO industry. It’s what keeps others thinking that the industry is a bunch of idiots.
Chat on Jan 2, 2009 at 11:40 am
PageRank has become an obsession with webmasters and developers. Having a good site does not equate to a higher number in some cases. The frustration of being an actual web site developer is that someone that just writes words and posts it on wordpress can get a higher pagerank than someone that just spent the better part of a year developing a site from scratch using the latest development tools and years of college education. Really quite sad yet the reality of the world. Words translate to dollars.
Matty Byloos on Jan 2, 2009 at 2:52 pm
I started a brand new site just for my name, and after only a month or two, with some links and some content, I went from a 0 to a 4. Maybe there’s some consideration for how limited your keywords are?
garry egan on Jan 2, 2009 at 2:57 pm
@Doug Heil You obviously haven’t monetized your sites then if you think PR is a joke. Try monetizing a PR1 site and let me know how much you get per link. “…the industry is a bunch of idiots”
Nope, just you. The only people who claim PR is worthless is people who can’t seem to get it right and try and discount it.
Please don’t stop your thinking. It leaves more room for the pros who monetize sites for a living.
garry egan on Jan 2, 2009 at 3:02 pm
@Doug Heil I got a little carried away there with that last post. Please accept my apologies.

My site used to be a PR5, then dropped to a 4 then to a 3 and now we are back to a PR of 4. During that time my SERPs have only improved & my traffic has increased. I used to get upset with the PR updates and then realized for sites like mine that do not sell advertisement space, PR is of little consequence if your keywords rank in the top 5.

Diseñador on Feb 13, 2009 at 2:49 am
I do not know if Google updates the pagerank, but I already has over 1 years with a PR4, every time Google does not put it more difficult to attract visitors to our site, Google wants all the web traffic for them, is not just be left to compete and I am trying to get by with Google Adsense.Pero really earn a pittance if you have it 5 to attract more visitors.
Greetings.
