Use Google Translate Within Any Android App, Use Offline on iOS

For Android users, gone are the days of copying and pasting text on your mobile device into Google Translate. With the new ‘Tap to Translate’ featured announced today, you can translate text without having to switch between apps.

To make this happen, highlight and copy text within any app. When the text is copied, a pop-over icon will appear indicating you can translate that text. Tapping on the icon expands it into a new window right within the app you’re using, so you can get your translation right then and there.

Tap to Translate works for all 103 of Google Translate’s languages on any Android phone running Jellybean (4.2) and above.

Within this announcement, Google also announced a small update for iOS users which bring a feature Android users have already been utilizing. The new Offline Mode will let you to download language packages on your iOS device to. When you have a language package downloaded to your device, you can translate text to and from that language whether you’re connected to the internet or not.

Android users can now take advantage of both of these features, as Tap to Translate will also be compatible with Offline Mode. These updates are rolling out over the next few days.
