Google’s Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) Account for 7% of Traffic to US Publishers

As the one year anniversary of Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMPs) rolled around this past Friday, Adobe Analytics revealed AMPs account for 7% of traffic to top US publishers. This data is accurate as of December 2016.

The report also reveals between April 2016 and December 2016, the amount of AMPs on the web grew by 405%. The rise in the number of AMPs on the web could certainly account for the reported 896% traffic increase to AMPs in November 2016.

Adobe’s findings are based on an analysis of over 1.7 trillion visits to over 16,000 mobile web pages from January 2014 to January 2017. The data on AMPs in particular is based on traffic to top US publishers between April 2016 and December 2016.

Though AMP technology was first available in February 2016, it wasn’t until September 2016 that they began being indexed in organic search results. That’s another aspect to consider with respect to the spike in organic traffic to AMPs at the end of last year.

Most recently, Google’s iOS app began returning AMPs in its search results, so we could end up seeing yet another spike the next time data like this is revealed.
