Google Maps Can No Longer Book Uber Rides

Google has removed the ability for users to book rides with Uber directly though the Google Maps app.

This is a feature that has been around since 2017, and was removed without any announcement other than an update to the “Request a ride” help page

“You can no longer book Uber rides directly in Google Maps. But you can still look up the route in the Maps app and then request the ride from the Uber app.”

For the past 18 months users were able to search for, book, and pay for an Uber ride within the Google Maps app. It wasn’t even necessary to have the Uber app installed.

Now, instead of being able to directly book an Uber, Google Maps will give an estimate for the fare and provide a shortcut users can tap on to book a ride in the Uber app.

That means users will now have to install the Uber app, if the didn’t have it already.

At this point it is not known why Google has removed direct integration with Uber.

It’s worth noting that Alphabet has a stake in Lyft, which is Uber’s biggest competitor. There’s also a possibility that Uber decided to end the integration in order to drive more installs of its own app.
