Windows Live Mail Has Four-Month Expiration Date

From Inside Microsoft, Windows Live mail accounts will have a four-month expiration date; meaning, if you go away for four months your account will automatically be deleted. Gmail has a nine month expiration date, which for me begs two questions: why can’t Microsoft mimic this, and how did such an awkwardly branded name as Windows Live get released out in the wild?
