I don't think it is as simple as you make it out to be. Sure, anyone who wants to put the time and effort into learning about SEO and keeping up with the evolution of search algorithms could probably be able to have some success. The problem is they would have less time to actually run the business that the SEO work is promoting.
On top of that, there is the issue of cutting through the clutter and disseminating the advice prevalent on SEO blogs and forums. Sure, you can find some good advice but there is a ton of garbage too get through.
I recently worked as an in-house SEO for a real estate related company and spent a lot of time talking SEO on some Real Estate social networking sites and much of that time was spent explaining that the techniques many were promoting were not going to help and could actually hurt them. Many other industries have similar social sites where they spread misinformation amongst each other. If they don't have a knowledgeable SEO to guide them many will make mistakes that could really hurt their long term success.
If someone wants to spend the time to truly learn SEO they can have success but they may fall behind their competition who used a professional SEO from the beginning and spent their valuable time actually running their business.

You need to go with experts but what actually should matter is whether to go with in-house SEO or outsource it. The client has to figure out which one is beneficial.

Expertise, experience, organization- an SEO firm should have processes in place to execute the changes you're talking about... and be results oriented and insist that you track KPIs.

Problems with in-house SEO are learning curve AND more importantly, politics- frankly, it seems that companies are more willing to listen to paid external experts even if they're paying those experts less than they would their in-house guy or gal. Familiarity breeds contempt- and working with multiple clients from an agency perspective, you get more experience- I'd be afraid of getting stale if I worked in-house in just one vertical.

David, I could not agree more...

"People hire SEO companies often for the same reasons they hire attorneys. They need a trusted advisor who is engrossed in the industry on a daily basis. If something changes on the search engine landscape they want to know about it. Therefore I conclude the many times a firm is hired partly for an increased level of comfort and partially for the added expertise that can be derived from a company or person experienced in search engine optimization."

I could have become an astronaut if I wanted to. I could even become a veterinarian and take care of my cat when he gets sick. Heck, I could even learn how to make my oil change and brake repairs on my car.

My point is, anyone can do anything he wants to do, proven he have the time for it. A majority of my clients understand SEO and its concepts, but are too busy to implement the tactics, play around with the codes, look for the right keywords and monitor the campaign.

This is how I sell myself: I help you save time and money by managing your SEO campaign efficiently, without you losing any sleep over it.

"Speak for yourself, Brent - if you seriously believe anyone can easily replicate your work, then obviously you have no real SEO services to offer."

I can hardly agree with this statement. I am a firm believer that anyone can accomplish anything. There is no secret formula to SEO. Google patents all their information and it is publicly available.

Aside from what I mentioned please inform me what an SEO company can offer that an experienced client cannot. Aside from the attorney example given and possibly a few contacts. Anyone who devotes the time can learn the trade. That is how most people started in the industry.
