I was in the technology domain at the time, and it didn't make much sense to me why "retail" technology was any different than "consumer packaged goods" technology. I don't think there are any negatives with being strongly immersed in a specific vertical: in the case of marketing and particularly search and social media, it can be helpful to know your competitive landscape and key terms. But that's really pretty fundamental stuff in the grand scheme of things, and I'm not sure it's significant enough to be a consideration.
