In my opinion Microsoft is still getting more users. Microsoft wants now to buy Yahoo! and if it is possible, they can beat Google.

Microsoft's monopoly? Now who's living in the past? Those days are over - look at Google and Microsoft's M&A departments/law firms and you'll see who's really buying out everyone.

I hope to all hell Microsoft can get its cool status back and attract more talented people. Google's Big Brother efforts freak me out while Bill Gates' generous philanthropy is amazing. Go Microsoft!

The big picture here:
Google is now adding another serious challenge to the monopolistic grasp of Microsoft. This comes in addition to the massive up-turn of sales in Apple units since the gimmicky colored iMacs were first released in the nineties. Following a massive breach in their death-grip hold on the home PC and small business computing, Microsoft was nailed (rightly so) for certain plausibly monopoly-aimed tactics in their packaging and license agreements. Fast-forward to more current events. Sony is now a highly respected competitor in the market; Apple is no longer just for high-end users and is steadily becoming more affordable; Intel gave MS the finger when they merged their collective innovation with Apple; Linux now has the Beryl desktop, which makes it more like the MacOSX Leopard; Vista, is well... Vista, costing twice as much for the same options given in the basic (and only version needed) new Apple system; Google is starting to create a software suite which is accessible via the "Cloud"; Gates got pied; Intel has a new solid state memory design; and, both the high-end OS and the open source OSs all offer superior suites to MS's Office, all of which are free (TextEdit on OSX is now a robust and featured little bugger).
So, Microsoft should be scared. No one is just out to snipe them, the others are simply offering better, and far more eloquent, programs and consumers are reacting in kind. The only ones left rooting for Microsoft don't keep up with technology. These are the people who use Windows because that's what they know and that's good enough for them. Thus, I still use Windows every day at work, but I have a superior system in my laptop. And another system which is far more secure on my old laptop. Microsoft won't be killed by Apple, Google, Linux or Sony... they'll just stagnate until the reality sinks in and corporations start looking for an operating system and office suite, which doesn't have massive design flaws, and treats hackers (even lousy ones) like the first sailor off the boat and consumers like the last sailor in line.
Don't get me wrong, they've ripped off some great ideas from better programmers for decades and convinced people that Windows is the only choice, but I've never swallowed such sophisms before and I continue to investigate flaws in everything I encounter. I just gave up on Windows, as dead in the water, when they released Millennium Edition and haven't seen anything which could convince me that I wasn't right.

Competition is good. But I still don't see any advantage in having my data on someone else's hard drive. Safe from computer crashes? I upgrade my PC when it starts acting flaky. And anything truly urgent I usually have a copy of it in my inbox somewhere. Multiple copies? Big deal if there are multiple copies of the document! Who is that hurting? You can access your docs from any computer? I have a laptop, I don't need access from a million computers. So how is Google Works better than Office again? Okay, so it's free. So is Microsoft Works - it comes on your PC and it has more functionality.

All I see is a stripped down version of Microsoft Works for the web. What am I missing?

Product competition is always good for the consumer, particularly when it's good clean make-a-better-product-than-the-other-guy competition.

Hopefully, at least some of this "war" will include that sort of competition. (Microsoft doesn't have a very good reputation, there...)

I suppose that it could be considered wishful thinking on my part that we'll get better products and services as a result...

My thinking was this: having another person/company around to spur you on keeps you on your toes, always thinking of ways to improve. Competition gives you a reason to do better.

Wouldn't it be great to think that we, the customer, would win as a result of this battle? However, since I don't own stock in either company, I have a bad feeling about this...

My money is on the Big G. I think that Microsoft have seriously shot themselves in the foot with the release of Vista. There are some days when I yearn for Windows ME...
